    308 Winchester Caliber Opinions...

.308 is a fantastic round. I use it in long-range match shooting all the time and have no problems with shots out to 1100 yards. I've hunted deer and wild pigs with it. And my son took a great kudu, black wildebeest and gemsbok with it last month. All of his shots were at ranges of roughly 250...

Have any of you guys seen or hunted with Air bows before?

One of my hunting buddies has one. He used it last year to take a whitetail. They are loud, but the velocity they generate on the arrows is amazing. Not my cup of tea, but an interesting toy.

SOUTH AFRICA: Father & Son Hunt With Roche Safaris

Thank you to all who have expressed their good wishes and congratulations. It was a great trip, and one that I am confident has ignited my son's desire to go back to Aftica and to hunt other great regions of the world.

SOUTH AFRICA: Father & Son Hunt With Roche Safaris

I had the opportunity to do my first African safari in 2016, with Roche Safaris. As happens with many people, the desire to do a second hunt immediately welled up and I began considering when to go back and the logistics for bringing my son with me. Due to some good luck and the graciousness of...

    Traveling with a Minor

I returned to the States yesterday from an eight-day hunt in South Africa with my 14 year old son. I had the notarized consent to travel from my wife, as well as official version of his birth certificate and certified copies of my, my wife's, and my son's passports. This worked fine and we had...

Transiting through Ethiopia to RSA Permits needed to transport rifles?

I leave next week from the US on Ethiopian and was told that I needed to have the declaration forms ready to be executed on checkin. They said that I did not need any other forms to transit Ethiopia, but "would need a permit in South Africa." I am bringing multiple copies of the Ethiopian...

Traveling with minor to RSA - documents?

My son and I leave for RSA in a little under a months and I want to make sure I have no unexpected surprises since his mother is not coming with us. I have an official state-issued copy of his birth certificate, his passport and a notarized parental consent affidavit from his mother (drafted in...

    308 rifle choice

I can't speak to the BRNO, but have experience with the CZ and Bergara. Frankly, for the money, I think the Bergara is a better value and a really solid rifle. The action is incredibly smooth, and the trigger is easily adjustable. When you find the weight you like, it is crisp with no creep or...

    Son's first hog hunt

He hasn't stopped talking about the trip since we got home (and it whet his appetite for our trip to RSA in June). So, I think it is safe to say that my son and I are happy to travel to wherever hogs need to be eradicated and do our share. Just let me know where to come!!

I mentioned in the "What trips are you taking" thread that I would be taking my son on his first hunting trips this year. Well, as we just returned from the mountains of West Virginia and his first hog hunt, I thought I would give a quick report. We hiked the mountains for about two hours in...

Help Me Choose a 1911 Pistol

In the semi-custom area, Les Baers are hard to beat. They are designed purely for function and run flawlessly. The fit is one of the tightest you will find. I have both a full size 45 and 9mm and they are great. I also have a full size Kimber in 9mm and, despite historically not liking...

Anyone has experience with Blaser R8?

I have used a friend's R8 chambered in 300 WSM. It was a tack driver. The ergonomics were off for me a bit, as I am a lefty and was shooting his right-handed rifle. But, the action was insanely fast to operate very nice trigger. I have a standing search for a left handed Blaser and when I...

Looking For A Left Handed .375

Thanks for all of the responses. I am still considering what to do. I have decided, however, that for my hunt this year, I won't "need" the .375. (Recognizing, of course, the inherent subjectivity in the concept of "need"). I am taking my 14 year old son with me and don't plan on hunting...

Who is going where this year? Lets hear about all the fun trips planned so far

I attended a regional SCI banquet last night and, despite telling myself to keep my hands in my pocket, I somehow walked out with a three day Argentine dove hunt for two hunters. Oh well, you only live once. Can't wait for the hunting this year to begin.

Who is going where this year? Lets hear about all the fun trips planned so far

This is the year that I start taking my son on some trips. We are hunting hogs in West Virginia in the spring, going to RSA for plains game in the summer, and hunting free range aoudad in West Texas at the end of the year. He's hunted dove, pheasant, and whitetail with me, but these will be...

    About to lose my mind

Welcome. There clearly is a pattern among Africa hunting enthusiasts. The anticipation for the first trip, often cited as a "trip of a lifetime" if brutal. But, you then you quickly find that it is nothing compared to the waiting, saving, and scheming to get back for your second trip. And...

Transiting through Ethiopia to RSA Permits needed to transport rifles?

I was able to book business class tickets with United from DC to RSA for my hunt this summer. The flight is being handled as a co-share by Ethiopian air. As a result, we are connecting in Addis Abbaba before heading to RSA. Does anyone know if I will need permits or other approvals to take...

Did anyone book a hunt at the Great American Outdoor Show in Pennsylvania?

So, the Great American Outdoor Show is going on this week. It is one of the (if not the) biggest outdoor show in the States. I was there opening day and, as usual, the turnout from guides was amazing. Anything and everything you could possible want under one roof. I was able to see Roche...

Company to assist with transporting rifles for hunt in RSA?

I apologize in advance for asking a question that, perhaps, should be obvious to readers of the forum; but, I seem to be lost at the moment. 9mm suggestions

Personal preference plays a lot into the caliber choice. Modern bullets have changed the dynamic of the debate as to whether a 9mm is suitable as a personal defense round. I love my 45s, but also see the merit in relying on a 9mm that I know is reliable and that I can shoot accurately. In the...

    9mm suggestions

I'm a lefty and carry a 9mm 1911. Love it. I also, on occassion, will carry a Walther PPQ Gen II. One of the best triggers on a polymer gun I have ever tried. I really like that little gun. It fits in your budget.

Anyone else hoping for late season deer?

You have to love whitetail. They roam my neighborhood with complete abandon. When they are in the yards, they pay you no mind and you could almost hand feed them. But, take three steps into the woods and they become ghosts that spook at the slightest sound or smell.

Happy New Year to all. I'm hoping to benefit from your collective experience. I am really looking at a West Texas Aoudad hunt, as I seem to have...

    Hitlist Question

I would let the circumstances of the hunt dictate which way you go. While I start with a general wish list, I go into the hunt open to taking mature examples of the animals that present themselves - the older the better, even if they aren't the biggest trophy. i prefer this type of...

What was the deciding factor in choosing your outfitter

It was a gut feeling after meeting several PH's at the Great American Outdoor Show. Given the cost and commitment involved in hunting Africa, it was important to me to talk with possible guides and find one that I "clicked" with. The quality of the overall hunting experience is dictated so...
