    Fishing in Yukon

This will be my first time with Chris Widrig. He seems to be an old school gentleman, and he's always ready to answer my emails and give advices. I know he has a good area and good reputation. Did you had good hunt with him too?

    Fishing in Yukon

'Morning Friends, next year - between late august and first week of september - I'll be in Yukon for a Grizzly and Caribou hunt. I will hunt around Snake River, Bonnet Plume Lake and Bonnet Plume River - really close to the border with NWT (area "6"). Have any of you ever fished there? I believe...

So what is it about hunting?

I think for most of us (me included) hunting is not just a hobby. I would consider myself a hunter even if I didn't own rifles - in fact I am a bowhunter, too. Hunting is who I am. Is like to light a fire, making sex or looking at the stars : something we as a species have always done. It's also...

    European mount taxidermy questions

This is the way I do, very simple and solid - but I admit it's not a true and traditional European style. The threaded rods are epoxy glued into the skull, on the back of the shield there is a washer and a nut, both cashed to make it flat on the wall.

    Reloading 9.3x64

Yes, same weight - actually the 8 is like 100 (+/-) grams less due to the different riflescope. Don't know : it's something not easy to explain or to prove, but I believe cartridge design plays a role in recoil.
  10. Phil Giordano

    Reloading 9.3x64

Sure, you're absolutely right. But, I would say, there are different kinds of recoil - or, better, how the recoil is perceived. For example, I have a 300Wby, and an 8x68. Same rifles (Sauer 90), same barrel lenght. The 8x68 produces a lot, really I mean a lot, less recoil than the Wby. I would...

    Reloading 9.3x64

My 26" barrel would help in gaining just few more fps and reach the 2600 mark - flatter than many 308 with the punch of a 375, and much less recoil, in a lighter gun...

I would also say that our 9.3 would make a great Brown Bear cartridge as well - to say, the TTSX pushed at 2800+ would be my choice for that.

    Reloading 9.3x64

Yes, I definitely think that twist rate/rifling played a big role. For sure Tug and Tig bullets are perfect for any 9,3, hard to say if I'll get lucky with those long bullets. I know of a gentleman who used them with great accuracy in his Mauser 66. As for the powders availability, here is a...

I'd like to try the Norma Oryx 325 gr. Do any of you have some load suggestion? I have access to Reload Swiss powder (RS60/62 the more appropriate I guess), IMR 4350, trying to find again Norma powders. Any help?

May I suggest to simply refresh often the gun oil patina on your double? Just before to start the hunt at morning, or at the lunch break - simply and fast with the Ballistol "savett fresh" They are easy to carry in a pocket, I've found them perfect to travel with.

Has anyone successfully hunted Elk in Ontario?

This is so interesting to me, as I started my career as a hunter, going after Elk in Montana. I've always been fascinating in this majestic deer, a true symbol of the West. As I remember, the east was indeed home of the Eastern Elk, the biggest subspecies of them all, even bigger than the...

Accuracy issues with new factory ammo?

I live in Italy, and here - just as in almost the rest of the world I guess - it's very hard to find components. I also would add the some of those components, are no longer as good in quality as they used to be "pre covid". For sure I will start to reload my Big 8, just regret I didn't buy a...

Accuracy issues with new factory ammo?

No, it has always liked the 200 Evo showing super small groups with them. Problem is, with the actual production Evo ammo, the everage group is 3 or 4 times bigger than used to be. I started to be worry about the scope, the mounts, the rifle, an so on. But I found some old RWS 8x68 (the H Mantel...

Accuracy issues with new factory ammo?

Me, I can confirm that - went this morning at the shooting range, shot some some rounds from a very old box of 8x68 RWS H Mantel 187 gr. (a very different bullet structure / weight / velocity from the RWS Evo 200 gr.). Group of 6 shot - 3+3 fast shooting - went in 1.3" @ 100 mt, with a Swar Z6...

    The ideal retreat home

Thank you Wab! It's not as wild as the log cabin in the middle of nowhere I dreamed of when I was a boy, but for sure it's better suited to a retirement age. I love the country living, tending the garden, having my own made wine and oil, and the possibility to host friends...

    The ideal retreat home

Well, my place to retire will be my countryhouse in Umbria, just in front of the little town of Todi. There are rows of vines and olive trees all around, and the rolling hills are home of roe deers and wild boars, and good sort of upland game. Sure is not a home "in the wild", but it's a place I...

Accuracy issues with new factory ammo?

Sure, it could be the rifle or the scope. But I dubt because the set has never gone hunting in recent months, only target shooting, no damages at all, and problems started to show with the lot change. But I will (again) double check everything...

Accuracy issues with new factory ammo?

Accuracy issues with new factory ammo?

'Morning Gents I discovered accuracy issues with some RWS cartridges, purchased a month ago. A rifle I own, used to produce tight groups with a given factory ammo, now spread all over with the same brand and bullet. I'm talking about RWS Evo, in my darling Sauer 8x68. Everything else is tight...

    Do I need a 7mm Mag

Well, being the 7mmRM a (small) niche between your 270 and 300, you certainly have a good excuse to buy one, if you find a very nice rifle you can't live without... I do have a 270 and a 300wby (two Sauer 90), and I don't "need" another 90 in 7RM - but you bet, I'd love to find one!

    8x68S vs 300 Wea Magnum

I have both calibers, in two Sauer 90, same barrel and stock lenght, so I have a pretty good way to compare the two. To me, the 8x68S is a better caliber. - same velocity with less recoil (and a "straight" kind of recoil, not a jumping one) - more accurate on everage - heavier bullet and more...
