    Big bore load development process

Yea, I feel like I’m more developing to the max load the shooter with a confirmation of accuracy. Accuracy will likely be similar across the loads with open sights at 25-50 yds. I also learned the value of crimp and outside chamfer. Without, the case mouth will hang up solid going in the...

Good points....I feel like with open sights and 458 Lott recoil, I’m shooting more for what can I handle and give safe pressure with minute of buffalo accuracy!

    CZ550 Production ceasing?

or they are announcing their bankruptcy. I’m not really trying to be malicious. They just promised me something they couldn’t deliver. In all honesty, I was asking for some customization to their pattern. When I finally reached someone who could tell me that they couldn’t make it, it was clearly...

    Big bore load development process

Well, I do have a lead sled, but it won’t be enough for 500gr loads! i think I will just confirm max pressure and keep building my ability to handle it!

    Big bore load development process

OK guys, I had the 458 Lott out yesterday with min loss to get a feel. The first feeling I got was ,”how the hell am I going to develop safe accurate loads with all this recoil?” I would normally load develop by ocw method shooting 50-100 rounds. This would take a year with heavy loads to get...

Best Recoil Pad for .458 Lott

I put a 1-1/8”Kickeeze on mine, but haven’t shot it yet. I’m sure it will kick like a mother, so not sure how I will say it was better that something else! i chose this pad based on gunsmith recommendation.

Anybody seen this AHR rifle on Gunbroker

Sold for $2800....who is the lucky person? It is truly awful to hear that the CZ550 safari might be going away. I really cannot imagine it. It is a great action at a good price. What it really needs is to overcome the rem 700’s stranglehold on the us market. They are marginal guns that don’t...

Interested in experience with Dennis Olson Plains MT..

Just went to Plains yesterday. My rifle is complete. The action felt smoother and better timed than many I have felt in the store. I’m not sure if he worked on that, but possibly. Work performed: Cut barrel to 22”, crown and install barrel band front sight Bed action to stock Rechamber to 458...

Anybody seen this AHR rifle on Gunbroker

Both are great rifles! For me it came down to having more hands on time with the M70, really liking the M70 stock shape and knowing that feeding would be almost automatic. The CZ550 is a great base rifle, but feeding seems a bit suspect. The stocks are generally a little thick....and other than...

I’m more than comfortable with where I’m at with my M70, except I’m not shooting it yet! I just wanted to confirm that this looks like a great rifle....sometimes I overlook things others see right away. Frankly, I would like about 0.5” more LOP.

Anybody seen this AHR rifle on Gunbroker

Yea, I don’t think it has been in his shop long. I called him about 1 week before I bought my Winchester M70. That was maybe 1 week before this was listed. I asked specifically about 458 Lotts that he might know of around $3000. He had a #2 AHR on a plain CZ550 Safari with a 25” barrel. To me...

https://www.gunbroker.com/item/839275014 Tears me up that this was listed right after I bought my Win M70....mine is at the gunsmith being converted to Lott and adjusted to my vision for a 458 Lott. It pains me ever time Gunbroker tells me it still for sale! I hope somebody gets it and shoots...

    Montana Deer Hunting Ideas?

I have hunted Montana my whole life. I don’t live there anymore, but dad does. I still go back to hunt public land or public access land and the hunting is ok, but can be a bit of a struggle. They don’t mind as they can go out every day being retired! If I were looking for a place around...

    6.5x55 - 140 Grain Reload Velocity?

I really late to the show! I have a Ruger M77 in 6.5x55. I’m getting 2769fps. I’m not getting this with a book load... I determined what was safe by shooting the rifle and watching the chronograph, cases and targets. I’m loading Lapua or GFL brass fit to the chamber with a cbto 0.001” short...

    CZ Gunsmithing

I found a Winchester I liked and a proper gunsmith to make it what I want. Sights, length of pull, weight, trigger, barrel shorten...not small work, but less than a CZ would take and it will handle better as I really like Winchester stock patterns. I’m still going to be short a couple rounds...

Convert Win M70 458 WM to 458 Lott

Yea, but this is kind of opposite, right? Like a normal 458 Lott goes from throat diameter to bore at a steeper 2deg angle. On a conversation, it will go 2deg to the remaining 29 min throat....should lower pressure slightly and guide bullet to bore more accurately!
  23. nksmfamjp

Convert Win M70 458 WM to 458 Lott

One thing I did notice is that a Lott reamer won’t completely recut a WM chamber. The WM has a super long 29 min lead while the Lott has a short throat and 2 deg lead....interesting How well does shooting WM in a Lott work? I wonder for deer hunting in Ohio...

    6.5x55mm for Plains Game?

I agree with this statement. My Ruger shoots a 140gr Accubond loaded to 2762 fps into about 1” at 100 yds, but the best part is that load can ballistically be quite effective out o 500 yds.

    CZ Gunsmithing

One more round in magazine, true safari length action, rock solid front and rear sight, I read that most don’t need the work that is stated....the Winchester is great, but it is not quite the base gun as a CZ. I agree. That said, color match has some value. I think you will find Cerakote roughness has nothing to do with Cerakote and everything to do with surface prep. I don’t have proof, but I’d bet a rough blast before nitride will be as rough as a rough blast before Cerakote. Cerakote can adhere to...

Montana Rifle Co African.....on the way...

I understand what you are saying. Being a custom action, I expect them to know what they are doing without telling them how to do it. I suspect a rough feeling would be from the bolt not really being polished smooth before going to cerakote, but then they recommend some level of blasting for...

Montana Rifle Co African.....on the way...

No, that makes sense. Not sure what to do. I need the black coating, Cerakote is their upgrade....hmm...I may ask about options on that...I do know it breaks in slow. My Ruger was rough as a cobb until a few hundred bolt cycles!

Montana Rifle Co African.....on the way...

No, I wish, but I think it comes with a 1” Pachmyer Decelerator which is a good pad. I’d rather have another 1/2” of wood, but I can live with a 1/2” spacer. I’m surprised that Cerakote would be that rough. I’ve handled pistols with it and it was smooth enough. I was told 8lbs 8oz. Since...

Well, I called today to confirm my order and adjust the lop. It sounds like my rifle is going in to production soon! No problem adding 0.5” lop by spacer, but apparently the stocks are too short for that to be wood. Bummer! It will be nice to have a bit more lop to match some of my more...

    Big bore lop

Interesting viewpoints. I honestly think it has mostly to do with how square you stand to the target. A light gun will allow me to stand a bit more square. A heavy rifle, a bit more cross body for fore end leverage. I some how think 14” would be about right.
  49. nksmfamjp

    Big bore lop

Most of my standard rifles run 13.5-14” lop. I see many big bores at 14 +. I’m a tall guy at 6’3”. How do I know what lop is right? 14” on my AR seems long. 13.5” on my Ruger 6.5x55 is ok. On a DG Rifle, should I be looking 13.5” range or longer like 14+? I plan on not using a scope.
