My son & I hunted with Derian in early May 2024 for a buffalo cow cull hunt.
Our outfitter was Dieter Prinsloo of Mattanja Hunting Safaris, at the time of booking Dieter told us he was not available for the dates we wanted but he made a well qualified PH friend of his available, Gys Guillaume and his tracker Richard.
We stayed with Derian at the hunting camp that he runs, Buffalo Land - Giraffe Camp. The camp was excellent accommodation, the en-suite rooms were very comfortable, the grounds included a pool and large fire / BBQ. Meals were served in a large lodge, complete with TV area, bar & trophy room. The camp staff looked after us extremely well, laundry was done during the day, food was excellent, the lady in charge of food was like a second mom to my son, meeting all of his requests.
Derian and Gys worked as a team to locate many buffalo, finding the old cows in the groups was challenging but we managed to shoot a total of 3 and a male Nyala. The grounds held an amazing quantity and range of animals. There were good numbers of buffalo with large groups of both bulls and cows. the ground and landscape was very diverse with many pools and river running through the property.
It was a great experience, Derian , his assistant / driver Carl, Gys and his tracker Richard were a great hunt team. Derian, his wife and camp staff could not have taken better care of us or have made us feel more welcome.
I will be back with my wife and both sons for a future visit, I see one of those big bulls in my future, apparently all those big bull buffalos think I owe them money!
