    .416 MRE ? Mystery .416

Buckstix cleared this up. He was a previous owner of this rifle. It is based on the 460 Weatherby case shortened and necked to .416". Apparently a one off. It makes sense because a standard belted mag case does not fit the bolt face either, it is a sloppy fit.

    .416 MRE ? Mystery .416

So are the 416 MRE and 416 VanHorn one and the same ? Or are they similar concept but different dimensions ?

    .416 MRE ? Mystery .416

I guess my choices come down to this; Keep rifle as configured and obtain dies, punch out chamber to 416 Weatherby, or rebarrel.

    .416 MRE ? Mystery .416

The 1917 and P14 mag boxes are not large, at least in length. The 1917 is 30-06 length, and P14 is designed for the 303 which is shorter yet (though wider). While it is true the actions are large and can handle some of the biggest cartridges out there, it requires custom mag boxes and receiver...

    .416 MRE ? Mystery .416

If you do have the dies I would probably be very interested in them, depending on which direction I go. I was hoping you would chime in, that is your post on doublegunshop.com I linked to isn't it ?

    .416 MRE ? Mystery .416

Well, I think I found it. https://doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=647794&an= .416 Mid Range Express. Hmmm, got some thinking to do. Based on a 460 Weatherby case, a Remington or even Rigby reamer aint gonna clean that one up.

    .416 MRE ? Mystery .416

I just picked up a custom Remington 1917 I bought on Gbroker, listed as a .416 Rem Mag. I had my doubts, as it was marked strangely for a .416 RM. Turns out I was right, it is not a 416 Rem Mag. It is stamped "416 MRE." Anybody ever hear of such a wildcat ? It is chambered for a belted...

Why you dont want to hunt elephant..?

I have mixed feelings about elephants. Never had any desire to shoot one, and not sure I do to this day. However, I have an elephant hunt booked for this July. I witnessed firsthand the high numbers of elephant and the destruction caused by them in the Caprivi strip, and spoke with hunters...

Buffalo boss pre and post taxidermy

Begs the question, are all skulls boiled as common practice ? Stateside I do everything possible to avoid boiling skulls, I take them and get beetles to clean them. Is that not done in Africa ? I am about to finally receive my buffalo as a euro skull from 2024, I am hoping it wasn't boiled...

    460 Weatherby, Ryan Breeding

No it is built on a 1917 Enfield action, it and the P14 Enfield (and Remington 30) make an excellent basis for a DG rifle chambered for BIG cartridges. Art Alphin of A-Square made a business on building his Hannibal rifles on these actions.

sight hole drilled too deep into bore

I ran a bottoming tap to the bottom of the holes. After I did so, no light was visible as before when a flashlight was directed down the bore. Apparently when the holes were drilled they did not quite break through, subsequent firing ruptured the thin metal remaining. The tap pushed the metal...

    Does it matter to you?

Both my PHs in my limited experience carried doubles, one a Heym 470, one a Krieghoff 500. It was cool seeing the doubles, and even cooler that I was allowed to shoot my zebra with his .500, however I would not of thought twice if they were carrying bolt actions. Both hunt buff and elephant...

    Bore Brushes

I rarely use brushes of any material in my bores. I use the foaming copper solvent, followed by Kroil on a tight fitting patch. The Kroiled patch is either pushed through with a one piece rod and jag or pulled through with weedwacker cord. I really think brushes are unnecessary for the vast...

    Pump Rifle

I don't know about removing the baseplate on the newer mags. I don't use them, make a point to buy the older all steel mags when I can find them without paying an arm and a leg.
