Raymond Stark -New Ontario Canada Member

Another Ontarian here, formerly Montana. I return home ever fall for six weeks to hunt birds with my dogs ... and mule deer. It was a great season last fall. Probably the best in the last fifteen years. Thankfully because my two dogs are long in the tooth. Fr Britt will be fifteen in May...

404 Jeffery Build on a standard action ??

Wait ... are you a club member? Maybe we're neighbors? That would be weird. Guess we could grab a coffee at Tim's some time?

404 Jeffery Build on a standard action ??

The 416 Rem box will be longer than your standard length action's follower. I know guys have made the shorter standard action follower work but having a follower full length is more asthetic and keeps stuff from falling down inside the box over the opening above end of follower. The military...

404 Jeffery Build on a standard action ??

Duane Wiebe's booklet for building magnums on standard 98 Mauser was very useful for my machinist to set up for opening the bolt face. Before you start working on the rails, load up three dummy 404 rounds at standard OAL. Start with all three loaded in the box. That will leave top cartridge...

looks like a new, custom gun company starting up

Their website needs some work. A lot of dead end links. Showcasing "custom" rifles in plastic stocks? Really? Unclear what they are using for actions. Who is making the barrels?

Where to go for just Horn hunting

You need to understand plains game are antelopes not deer. They don't shed their horns every year. Once in a great while we stumble on a skull in the bush, but typically they are a bit on the rotten stinky side. Not something you'll want to stick in your checked bag. Or you can rent a gun and...

Thanks. I hope I can fit some time in. Well, if you want to shoot a couple of rounds, maybe I'll have to bring a sleeping bag :D Parker is a natural. He shot sixteen his first round of skeet this past summer. And he'd never fired anything bigger than .22 before that. He's only twelve...

Mulling over a bolt gun or a double rifle

I built my own 404J on a standard action military surplus Czech 98 Mauser. Very portable, nice balance, manageable recoil, short bolt throw, cycles flawlessly, plenty of punch, and looks pretty good. Cost me somewhere around $2700 when all said and done, including scope. But I did most of the...

I'm in NW Ontario and also avid shotgunner at the range and in the field. And three kudu skulls on the wall now. I'll be heading back at the end of August to maybe shoot another. I think I'll drive to Toronto this time. Three skulls from 2023 are still sitting in a crate at the taxidermists...

    Oops. Correct. I forgot.

    Weird pre 64 Model 70

You don't need to remove the crossbolt to remove the stock. Unscrew the two action screws on both ends of the trigger guard. Then lift the action out of the stock. Leave the crossbolt alone. It's there for a purpose. If you decide to refinish the stock, we'll get it removed then. Let's see...

    Where to begin?

I rebarreled the Springfield during COVID. No one was making barrels. I found another military sporterized military barrel on ebay for a good price and took a chance. It was very good. Lilja of Plains, MT made the barrel for my 404 Jeffery on a Czech 98 Mauser. It had to be threaded...

    Where to begin?

I think he would be thrilled if you took his gun and put your mark on it. My dad sporterized this Springfied in 1962 and I inherited it two years later when he built another one for himself. Since then everything has been replaced or modified but the receiver and bolt (I hunted hard with it)...

Boyd’s Stock for M70, go or no go?

That is to be expected. Boyd's cuts the stock for standard trigger and Timney are more bulky. Not a big deal. I wouldn't call it "a lot of work." I installed Timney triggers in both my 98 Mauser and 1903 Springfield. Dremel tool with a carving bit and some patience. Had never done it...

    Where to begin?

If that rifle is still in military configuration, you should DEFINITELY consider selling it and buying yourself another donor action. Those old military rifles are bringing crazy prices. You might be able to sell it for $1500+ while most spoertized Mausers go for $300-$600.
