Every time this photo pops up, it makes me wonder what the Highlanders who settled New Inverness (now Darien, GA) thought about the alligators there, seeing as there's zero comparison to anything native to Scotland.

Well, yes. But that's a completely separate species. Sort of like comparing a 13-foot American alligator to a 17-foot Nile crocodile.
