Has anyone used these?
I picked up a box yesterday, Semi Spitzer, and thought I’d give them a try in my 458 Win Mag.

I have loaded the 350 Barnes Original in a .458 SOCOM I chambered on a Savage. I’ve never used them on game. They group quite well at the reduced velocity of this particular chambering. We have a .458 Win Mag for a guide rifle and have always loaded the Barnes TSX line for it.

Thank you for the reply. I picked these up at my favorite gun store in Eagle River and thought they might be fun for Caribou.
I’ll load up and handful and try them out.

I don't have experience with the .458 Originals but have used various weights in .308, .338 and .358". they are a good conventional bullet. the jacket is soft copper so it mushrooms quite well. The only drawback that I noticed was a tendency to lose the core, but they did so well after most of the damage had been done. On caribou they would work very well.

Thank you for the reply. I look forward to taking a few to range. should be a hoot.

John did you find a load for these. Curious on powder choice. I want to try in my Lott for black bear

Good morning sir.
Andy Hawk, a super gunsmith in Anchorage has had my .458 for several months (Mdl 70) doing some semi custom stuff so I haven’t shot any of these.
Im trying 76 grains of H322. That should give me about 2400fps. If accuracy is good I will probably stay there. Maybe.
I ended up with a couple more boxes of the 400 gr and 6 boxes of the 450 gr original.
plus a couple hundred 450 gr TSX and one hundred Barnes 400 gr TSX all from another member here.
Please let me know what you come up with for the Lott

So I loaded up the 400 original with 75 gr h4895 and ended up with 2380fps seemed to shoot well off hand at 30yards.
also loaded same bullet with 18gr Trailboss for 1000fps. Seemed it wasn’t grouping well but what a nice light round.

I loaded 15 with 76 grains of H322. I haven’t had an opportunity to shoot them.
my rifle has a 22 inch barrel, so I’m anxious to see how they perform, accuracy and velocity. Will let you know of course.

That soft, 400 grain bullet at 2350-2400 FPS should be great for Moose and Bear. Maybe I’ll find out this season. This blond was sighted near my cabin last week.

Hello John,
This is a bit off topic but the 450gn projectiles works GREAT in the .458WM!
On another forum I read a field report (with pics) where a PH had to (as a last resort) shoot a charging cow elephant.
The PH aimed for the forehead and the result was instantaneous and it dropped immediately to the shot.
When his trackers were dressing out the animal they found the 450gn Barnes in the hip area!
This was at a easily obtainable velocity of 2190 fps.

Just wanted to mention it as a lot of people think going down to the 450gn projectile hurts the performance of the .458 - but every single person I've asked who's done it (including PH's) has said it's increased it. This includes people I've spoken too who use the LOTT and prefer the 450's...

Just thought I'd mention it.

Cheers,

Russ

ADI LOAD DATA: *START AT MIN LOAD AND WORK UP*

450gn - VARGET: MIN - 70gn =2083fps
MAX - 74gn = 2195fps

450gn - H4895: MIN - 70gn = 2100fps
MAX - 74gn = 2205fps

450gn - H322: MIN - 67gn = 2139fps
MAX - 71gn = 2220fps

450gn - BENCHMARK: MIN - 70gn = 2090fps
MAX - 75gn = 2220fps

450gn - H4198: MIN - 56.5gn = 2000fps
MAX - 60gn. = 2092fps

high there John and Russ, just to let you know I load 78 grains of AA2230 Fed mag primer and 450 Barnes TSX at 3.680 and this load in my rifle does not show any pressure issues and I get 2330 fps at 5 yards and outstanding accuracy with this load, it does recoil pretty hard and if I remember it is around 5800 ponds of energy. good luck and have fun. Thanks for all the great advise. I have a box of Barnes 450 grain TSX loaded with H322 and a box loaded with AA2230. Will keep you all posted with results.
I also have “a bunch” of the 400 grain originals loaded up. Should be a hoot!

everyone shooting a 458 and would like to see Barnes start producing and selling the 400 TSX should call or email Barnes and tell them we want the 400 TSX, Buffalo Bore got them to run a bunch and they offer them in their 458 loading,so if enough people ask they might start running them

ME is 5426 ft/lbs.

The 400gr Barnes Originals I’ve loaded in my .416 Taylor don’t have a cannelure? I just put a medium taper crimp on them and they don’t move in the cases under recoil.

Hello - I was looking at your post from several years ago regarding the Winchester 300 H&H. Any chance you still have the lefty M70 300 H&H for sale?
Thank you, Mike

An excellent AH member right here! I had a fantastic transaction with Hornedfrogbbq (I was the seller). His communication was first rate, payment was extremely fast, and I would have absolutely no reservations at all dealing with him again. Thank you, F!
Here we are, the last day of the show in Denver, it's been a good show but expecting a quiet day today. I will be back for-sure to do this show next year and maybe also do the one in Sacramento California.

On Monday I will be hitting the road driving from Denver and eventually make it down to Atlanta for the flight home.

its going to be a good year!

Hi Rem280, Saw your post on getting selected for Idaho Elk. Do you have a zone(s) selected? I live in N Idaho, might be able to offer some ideas.

Cheers,

Craig
