What is the draw of a Ruger#1?

In the sands of time, I found the finest explanation of why the Ruger #1 is supreme.

Read Pondoro's well written description. (I love that he would favor banning magazine rifles for safari as heathen guns for cheaters! He was a purist!)

I love the #1 because its short and fast handling. My #1 in 30-06 with a 22" barrel is almost 4" shorter than than a bolt gun in the same caliber and barrel length and that's a huge advantage in tight quarters, not to mention having no action is a huge weight savings allowing for a heavier stiffer barrel. The safety is located in the correct spot, on the tang, making the rifle ambidextrous so their is no extra cost for left handed shooters.

If I could find a #1 in .35 Whelen my T/C Encore would never leave the gun safe.

Agreed on all the #1 love. I would say there is some love due to the Dakota 10 single shot due as well. IF you are going to put $2000 into accurizing, custom rings and custom stocking a number 1, there is a better option now. For $3000-$4000 the Dakota is a marvelous hand built rifle. I've had many number 1s and I've had two dakotas. My go-to gun is my 7x57 dakota and before that it was a stainless 6.5x55 Ruger.

If you go custom and handload, maybe a .350 griffin and Howe is a better choice? You can get proper brass, but otherwise you just neck down a 375hh and enjoy the awesomeness of a fully operational death machine!

I gave him the 35 Whelen barrel and scope that he currently has on his Encore. I think that the reason he wants one in a Number 1 is that it is a little more comfortable to shoot.

But Art you have access to a Number 1 in 416 Rigby. What more could you ask for?

The 416 is a great gun for Africa but its a bit big for deer here in the states.

#1's are just such a nice rifle to carry to the field. Here is a couple pics of #1's that I tarted up a bit. Have put better glass on them sice these pics. The full stock is a 7x57, the other is a 450/400. I am currently restocking a 9.3x74 with English

walnut similar to the 450/400.

Have owned more than a few of these in various cals, and like them a lot, except for the big bores, kick can be brutal with them. I had a great shooting .450-400 that gave me a recoil headache so sold it for a CZ .404 Jeffery which also has gone down the road in favor of a beautiful custom Krieger barreled .404J that shoots like a varmint rifle. Also have a great shooting little K1A in .257 Roberts and still have my first one, a 1A in 7x57 and a 9.3x74R with gorgeous wood.
