This will be my first. Is there a choice that is sub moa off the shelf, or are we talking about rebarreling, etc. What A/R cartridge is potent way out there?

Id choose a knights armament sr25 in 308 or 6.5 with a knights suppressor to match. They're probably the most reliable of the semis and well proven. They come with a price though but it's nothing compared to some of the high end hunting rifles on here

223 is an easy choice for long range target shooting. You can get a cheap AR, and then throw on a Ballistic Advantage Hanson barrel and a two stage trigger and be shooter limited. If I remember correctly, Aero Precision uses Ballistic Advantage barrels, just not the Hanson profile. If you’re talking about long range hunting, get an AR10 in 6.5 Creedmoor

Interesting discussion.
On the AR-15 platform, is the 6.5 Grendel a good option?
I have read good things about it, what about the 6.5x223 aka 6.5 TCU?

As for off the self part of question, I would say LMT MARS is really outstanding right out of the box. They have them in 6.5CM, 6CM, 308 and 556. I also am not sure what way out there means to you, but a 77gr smk out of a 18-20" barrel is a damn fine killer for a hell of a lot of yards.

My favorite non-556 DMR is my LaRue in 6.5CM, I have a 22" on it. Shoots well under an 1".

IMO, the most fun - and near ideal for home defense - is just a *quality* standard weight, 16" AR-15; Mid-gas, 1x7 twist, 5.56 Nato chamber, with chrome lined barrel that you can "ride hard and put up wet". 2 MOA-ish, maybe 1.5 if you are lucky with Hornady 55 gr fmj reloads, to 77 gr OTM reloads. IMI M193 and IMI 77 gr Razor work pretty well also.

Learn to make it rock and roll on CQB drills. Plink to 400 with the 55s and a little further with the 77s.

Noveski and Daniel Defense are a couple of (better quality) examples. I'm sure there are more.

I also have the proverbial longer range AR with 18" Stainless SPR barrel that works well to our 785 Yd steel (w 77 gr Sierra & Nosler), but it's more of a safe queen these days.

So a 308 is about as powerful as they go?

458WM. Problem is there were only two ever made. ;)

After that, I'd choose a 300WM from Nemo for long range.

You can put together an accurate AR with quality barrels, bolt carriers and trigger. Many quality uppers and lowers.

The trigger will always be the weak link in the platform. After market triggers help. But the longer lock time of an AR is an issue.

A buddy and I threw together an AR-10 with a $125 bear creek arsenal 308 barrel. That thing would shoot .75 in groups at 100 yards with ball M80.
The AR is an inherently accurate platform.
It can be. It can also be easily screwed up.

My Daniel Defense M4V7 is incredibly accurate, but that's also what I'd expect when spending that kind of money. And yes, I had to upgrade the crap trigger that came with it.

This was my choice. But this is not for "tactical" shooting. It is a bit heavy.
German high-end AR-15 by Schmeisser. With a heavy match barrel. So far, 1 MOA, with the potential to improve with a better bullet.

@BeeMaa DD does not build for accuracy, they build for reliability and quality. Accuracy is a by product.
DD is on the short list of off the shelf ARs I would buy.
What trigger did you install. I really like the larue MBT.

The advantage of a higher end gun assembled by the vendor is that all the parts work reliably together. Just buying a set of parts, even very good parts, won't ensure reliability and tolerance stack is correct.

In my case, my 308 platforms are M14s, B&T APC308, and a SIG Spear. The M14s are my favorite and with a vacuum impregnated stock or McMillian, there are no warping issues. The B&Ts are amazing but all steel.

I have a couple of DD rifles, they are all super accurate and great rifles, but the stock trigger is insultingly bad. They should just ship without one if they can't do better.

Sir, I will gladly take that 16 gauge off your hands. I was waiting for your Winchesters but I'm a sucker for a 16 ga.

I bought a great deal of the brass he had for sale, plus I already had many hundred rounds.

How much brass are you looking for?
