I returned from my very first African Safari on July 12th. I took 2 handguns with me. My .480 Ruger SRH with 7.5 barrel and 4x Leupold scope on it. Other pistol was a S&W X frame in .350 Legend, 7.5 barrel, Holosun EPS carry Green dot. I took 7 animals total. 5 with the .480 and 2 with the .350. I was shooting Underwood 300gr Extreme Penetrators out of the .480 and Barnes 170gr. FB TSX bullets out of the .350 Legend. Both worked great . I took a Blesbok, Impala, Gemsbok, Kudu, and Bushbuck with the .480. Kudu being the biggest animal, it was a 40 yard shot and only made it 25 yards before piling up. Quartering away shot and full penetration. Gemsbok only made it 25 yards also. With .350 I took a Blue Wildebeest and a Warthog. Found a perfectly mushroomed bullet just under the hide of the Wildebeest and got full penetration on a quartering away shot on the Wart hog. Thought this was going to be a once in a lifetime hunt, but already planning on going back.

Living in a straight wall cartridge state, I have been starting to use the 350 Legend on whitetails, was wondering how it would work on African animals. Blue wildebeests can be pretty tough, sounds like the 350 did a great job on it.

I’ve taken over 30 American whitetail deer with the 350 legend, and witnessed over 100 taken with it. As such I’ve got a LOT of strong opinions about the cartridge.

The cartridge itself? Beautiful, perfect in every way (given the constraints it was designed with)

The bullets some manufacturers make for it? Some of the worst in the entire industry, across multiple manufacturers. Some of the worst penetration I’ve ever seen (8” total out of a 22” barrel bolt gun, with 20% of bullet weight retained, only bone hit was a rib) was with Winchester deer season XP. Second worst is the Remington core lokt, third worst is Winchester power point.

From my best guess, they tried make sure the slow speed of those bullets would get 2+ times expansion like normal 243/6.5creed/30/30 ammo can usually get. This is a mistake. The bullets out of the 350 are considerably wider than those already, but not much heavier. Fortunately, even a non expanded 350 legend bullet (a straight cylinder with no tip) would have enough width and energy transfer to kill pretty much anything outside of Africa. Even in Africa, dangerous game, giraffe, and a few others would probably be the only things a 350 would be sub marginal for.

Barnes copper ammo is by far the best you can buy for the 350 legend. 1.5x expansion at most and awesome penetration and weight retention. For handloaded, the best results I’ve had have been with the cutting edge bullets .350 legend long range whatever it’s called with the delrin tip. Awesome accuracy with almost no effort, great BC all things considered, easy to get 2300fps from (in my 22” barrel bolt)

I’ve had 80-90% good results with the hornady FTX, but there’s been a few times where it has also kindof exploded. I think if they want to have such a thin jacket for this big of a bullet, it should be bonded or it’s just going to grenade like a varmint bullet.

Also, avoid the subsonic ammo at all costs, the 350’s do not come with a fast enough twist rate to shoot anything with a full powder load subsonic, so what you’re really getting is just a downloaded 9mm for energy which just… isn’t enough for anything but a perfect shot at a perfect angle.

Here’s just a handful of the game I’ve taken with the 350 legend (Winchester xpr) from ranges sub 10 yards to roughly 300:

I tried pretty much all the .350 Legend ammo I could get my hands on before going. The Barnes was the most accurate and I knew the all copper bullet would penetrate good, and it did.
I wouldn’t take anything else, perfect choice.what velocities are you getting with the revolver? Didn’t know they made a 350 in a revolver, figured they’d have one in the buckhammer since it’s rimmed, do you have to use moon clips or whatever they’re called?

I use moon clips. You dont have to, but if you dont you will have to poke each one out 1 at a time. 1528 fps was my average, 881.5 average ft-lb of energy.

I bought some of these, have yet to try them on whitetail. The velocity on these state as 2325 with a 160 grain all copper bullet, the Barnes states 2125 with a 170 grain copper bullet. These may be worth a try.

Do you have a chrono? Be curious to see how honest those numbers are, awesome if true. I know I can get 2300 out of 170’s in my handloads of CEB but it’s pushing it for how much powder I can fit in the case without crush loads

I just watched a YouTube video by Mason Leather Outdoors, on these 160 grains from Bear Creek Ballistics, the average velocity was around 105 FPS slower than the advertised velocity. That was from a 16” barrel so perhaps a 20-22” barrel would be closer to the advertised velocity.

Sounds about right, mine is a 22 so probably pretty close to accurate then

How did you mount the optic on the .350? I’d love to have one of those S&W x frame pistols but didn’t think you could get an optic on it. I know a lot of folks aren’t huge fans of the round but I live in a straight wall state and have taken some heavy whitetails with it. Also had it in a high fence hunt to see what it would do and 3 guys shot 3 whitetail and 3 hybrid rams with it. All good shot placement, I don’t think anything ran further than 20 yards or so. Probably not what I’d use if I could choose whatever I wanted but I’ve been happy with it for what it is

Wow thank you for posting, very interesting.

That looks to be a Hell of a good Gemsbok & maybe some creative photo taking, but I think still good ?

Was the Bushbuck taken after dark, near crops ?

Well done all with a handgun !

Good info @Rifleman97 i was going to build a .357 Maximum rimmless on a little Sako bolt action over 25yrs ago they hold 7 cartridges & that cartridge can be loaded to 35Rem velocity’s so bullets suitable in the Rem would work, took too long & Winchester brought out the 350 legend so will make one of these using a 9mm barrel, they have 1-10 twist straight off .

I thought for Women & children it would be a great Deer & pig cartridge & seems it is ?

Yes, Bushbuck was taken after dark at the edge of a squash field.

Unfortunately you can’t use 35 remington bullets in the 350 legend as they’re a different diameter. .358 for the remington, and .355 for the 350 legend, so the only bullets available for it are either handgun bullets, or bullets designed specifically for the legend. 1:10 is fast enough for subsonic, but as far as I know all factory options are 1:14 or 1:16 twist rate for the legend, hence my stating that subsonic just isn’t powerful enough as it won’t stabilize the heavies. It will launch some of the 9mm handgun bullets at mach jesus though lol, I imagine the flat nosed solids would be really effective out of the cartridge in an AR for up close hog hunting.

It is an amazing deer and pig cartridge, I don’t put “for women and children” disclaimer on any chambering personally as the animal itself doesn’t change size or toughness when being shot at by any size of person. I’m a 220 pound man and my winchester XPR in 350 has practically turned from a tool into a companion with how many deer and other critters it has taken and how much I have used it.

Haha sorry I wasn’t meaning to be disrespectful by the Women Children, Small men thing & was afraid it might come across that way, not my intent at all, I’m fine with low recoil, light rifles, I meant easy to carry do a lot of work at closer range for learners & myself but in a cool do anything rifle, if you had read what I wrote I was making a 357 Maximum Rimmless which would be from a cut off 223 case, I should of said the rest it would be in a 358 barrel, not that that matters as long as the throat allows the release of the bullet from the cartridge it would be fine in a .357 barrel, getting a little tighter in a .355/9mm barrel but I suspect still ok if throated correctly ?

Would have tested all this by now but time shoots off at an alarming rate !

If you were to read up on what the .357 Maximum could do hand loaded in a rifle it might be a surprise, the reason I first looked at a Rimmless in a nice little bolt gun, almost a .35 Rem that could use modern pointed bullets, great pity Winchester went way off track .

Sorry to go off the thread so much, apologies !
