Does anyone have experience wirh Sax ammunition from Germany? Looks like bespoke product with other worldly prices. But do my eyes deceive me?! I see new manufactured 7x66 SE vom Hofe on the list!

sax ammunition
Their all copper bullet (not expanding but front breaks in 4/many pieces) are normally low weight for the caliber. Indeed they make also not so common calibers and African calibers

Cartouche sologne (France) also make not common caliber like 7x66 VH 150 and 170gr. cartouche sologne and most African calibers!

Also Labor fur Ballistic (copper and bonded bullet from Wim Degol (like Woodleigh)): Labor Fur Ballistic
7x66 VH 117gr

Sax and Labor fur ballistic make bullet with very good BC
The GPA from Sologne was more design for Driven hunt and has average BC (although they made a new version - but have not tested/seen it)
They have all their proprietary made copper fragmenting copper bullets.

I tend to prefer Barnes, Nosler E-tip or Hornady CX as they expand and do not break but I used the Sax 231gr for 338 lapua, good stfuff. Works well on Red Stag.

@reinwood, thanks for the good info, especially about Cartouche Sologne, i can’t believe they are also loading both 7x66 SE vom Hofe AND 7x75 SE vom Hofe! I want to find their prices now, i understand Sax is bespoke but their prices are eye watering.

You can find their price in the collumn "PVC boite de 20" that means : "Advised selling price, box of 20 rounds".
225 € for each caliber, and whatever the bullet loaded.

Cartouche Sologne may be CIP accredited, but those prices are insane. I understand they are not one of the industry giants, but damn that’s expensive.

In the period when I did not have a smaller caliber weapon, I used the SAX bullets in caliber 9.3x62 to hunt for small deer and wolves. With weight 155 grain, the initial speed is 3150 feet per second !! And energy is the same as bullets weighing 285 Grain. The petals are really divided when it hit and the foreigner has asked me - did you really shoot only once?))

In Europe Ammo is a lot more expensive than in the us and fewer people are reloading.

For instance, a Hornady 300 win whitetail is $40 in the us and in europe it is 60€/$70 !!
And European ammo manufacturer are even more expensive (RWS, NORMA, LAPUA, etc.)
The Ukranian war also driving shortage and price increase in Europe (looks like components were used primary for the defense industry)

Sologne prices are very high, that's a small company they most likely do not have the volume to lower their price - they position themselves. as alternative to big manufacturer with specific bullets and not common calibers.

I was lucky to buy a few boxes of 458 lott from cartouche SOlogne at my local gunstore - few african hunters, ammo on the shelf for very long time, got a crazy good deal.

Use them exclusively for my 375 h&h. Great ammo and company. They are light for caliber but they have tested them extensively also in Africa. You can always email them and they happily answer all of your questions.

In Canada I would say ammo prices are somewhere between those in the US and Europe. But price is only one part of the issue, availability is the other half. I'm very likely looking for 7x66 SE vom Hofe and regardless of price, it is just not available in Canada, especially brand new stuff. The fact that it is being newly manufactured is pretty cool. Once again, I realize that both Sax and Solonge are smaller companies and they appear to be using premium components and so prices will be higher. I need to determine where the price / need (desire) point is.... but bloody hell it is expensive :)

I would suggest you order the components brass and bullets that can be regularly shipped. Reimer Johannsen is the source for Sax. Shipping loaded ammo across the pond is insane. But unrestricted components make little trouble Germany to Canada.
Looking at load data for the 105 gr 7 mm bullets you get into territory with little gain for bigger cartridges with the 7 x66 , the 105 gr (older ) KJG with RL 17 already flies at 3550 fps out of my 7 RM.
I have changed to the 110 gr TTSX, cheaper and available.

@mooze, what can you tell me about Geschoss Manufaktur brass? Is it good quality? How does it compare to RWS?

Caveat: no personal experience!
there are 2 boutique brass manufacturers in Germany:

GM, closely associated with Johannsen in Neumuenster, took over Horneber after the founders retirement and has reactivated part of the previous production, but not all the exotics. reputedly good quality for may years. But now a new team.

then there is SHM in southern Germany, new since 2010. Reportedly excellent quality, new machines, tight quality control. Priced accordingly. 100x 7x 66 would be 426 EUR+ shipping.

Pick your poison!

BTW Prophetriver has Fox bullets, same material as sax brass, but endlesly cheaper and seem to work fine!
the other cheaper alternative are OK+ from Slovenia, which are very well made light drive band bullets. Not aware of any importer into Canada.

RWS is ok, but sometimes not so. the 8x57 brass is light and brittle. and less consistent than Winchester.
