While it may look kind of cool it would be nothing more than silly decor for me since I just palm the knob as fast as I can with force when cycling a DG rifle. Even the minimal, shallow checkered ring around many Win 70s isn’t necessary. I have even peeled the skin on my palm in the process and IMO any serious checkering would increase that potential.

As an aside—- I wonder if the pinky should be held up when cycling a bolt using only the index finger and thumb…. maybe SOP when cycling a “paddle” bolt?

Very beautiful.

Is it correct that these are factory produced boltknobs, and that the M03 boltknob is interchangeable with the other Blaser Group rifles? Or was this specific one a custom?

Checkering a bolt can be for show or it can be for function.
Some bolts are just too smooth and one cannot get a good grip on it..that is why we checker our bolts.

To the guy who said a checkered bolt is rough on his hands made me chuckle...
It reminded me of an old friend..4th generation filthy rich, silver spoon.
Even though he was 4th gen American his money still smelled like sweat. This guy never did anything for himself. It was all done by people. The only thing he did himself was go to the bathroom..
He couldn't even drive a nail in the wall to hang a painting. He tried once and failed.
His hands were as smooth as a baby's butt.

Anyone that thinks a checkered bolt is
too rough on their hands, has been pushing too many pencils. Man up.

All beautiful examples! Remember that grip affects more than intentionally manipulating the bolt--it also affects ACCIDENTAL bolt opening. I carry left shoulder, rifle down position with a sling. My Mannlicher bugs me sometimes by getting caught somehow and opening and dumping a cartridge. Checkering could only make that worse, especially with fleece clothing. I don't want it too catchy.

Mannlicher doesn't lock the bolt when safety engaged? Wow! And I thought they were supposed to be top shelf guns. Or are you carrying it loaded with safety disengaged? I formerly had a scope relief wing safety on my 03A3 Sprinhfield that would disengage if the bolt handle was rattled. Had the same problem slinging it on left shoulder. The bolt handle caught in clothing, disengaged the safety, and opened the chamber. Could have been a lot worse than losing a cartridge! I changed the safety.

Correct observation--the wing safety will not engage with the scope mounted low, otherwise there would be no problem. I might investigate an alternate safety.

Bolt knobs are not to be griped!!! Just to add to open and close, smothly, de bolt!!! Any interference with this, as to checker the knob, does not contributes to it in any way!
Other thing is a smoth, not edged decoration, a mater of taste.

The Mannlicher Schoenauer was designed (1900) before 'scope mounting had gained puoularity.

Vintage (pre WW2) MS 'scope mountings were typically removable (claw, 'Vienna snapper') and / or mounted high enough to clear safety and bolt handle.

Post WW2 solutions included other quick detach, swing a way, pivoting, as well as rail mounts along with 'shotgun type' safety.
