Hello all, I just recently joined to hopefully find some good advice. I am booking a Cape Buffalo hunt in Limpopo for 2027. After the cost of the Cape Buffalo for an 8 day hunt, I have about 5k to play with for other trophies. Right now the next up on my list is Waterbuck. Just wondering if there is anything that y’all would target for a first, and probably only, hunt in Africa?

It will never be one trip, trust me ;). But for the sake of argument. If 5k is your budget for extra trophies. I would go for a nice warthog, nyala
(endemic to Limpopo), zebra and a kudu or eland. If it is really the only trip your make it screams Africa for me.

Welcome to AH NoStepOnSnek!

Welcome to the forum... We have some great buffalo areas in the North West Province and Free State province. All large areas with self sustaining herds of buff, if you might be interested in a qoute let me know, we can build a nice package for you including extra animals.

All my best,

A Cape Buffalo hunt in Limpopo is a great choice, and it’s fantastic that you’re planning ahead. At Limpopo North Safaris, we operate across Limpopo, North West, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Northern Cape, offering fair-chase hunting in diverse, top-quality areas.

We’d be happy to help structure your hunt to make the most of your time and budget. Feel free to reach out any time.

Welcome, sound like the trip has been booked and now you just need to get two years fly past quickly. For 5K you can add a couple of trophies to your list. As mentioned Impala is a must, then maybe add Kudu or Nyala as one of the spiral horns. and maybe a gemsbuck also make a nice mount.

O yes and never leave a good pig in the field

Enjoy your planning

Hey Snek- listen to Gerrit (Bos en Dal):

Beautiful animal taken almost immediately after 1st breakfast in camp!

Congratulations! I am sure you're about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime.

"The only man I envy is the man who has not yet been to Africa- for he has so much to look forward to."

First, I'd listen to my PH, if you see an exceptional trophy you may want to take it even if it is not one of your intended targets. Second, I would study the trophy fees, and decide how best to distribute the money. In my experience plains game is generally split up into tiers in South Africa:

1. Animals less than $1000 - impala, common springbuck, warthogs. etc.
2. Animals between $1000-$2000 - Gemsbok, Wildebeest, Red Hartebeest, Zebra etc.
3. Animals over $2500 Kudu, Eland, Waterbuck, Nyala etc.

With the budget you mentioned I would give some serious consideration to a Gemsbok and a hartebeest. They both make great trophies, and I'll bet you can hunt them both for less than $2500.

Finally, these trips are expensive, that's all there is to it. Everyone has different means, and that is ok. But you've flown all the way there, and already spent a small fortune. Don't let a couple grand stop you from taking an extra animal or two if you have the time...Shoot the impala it's only an extra $500.

Right now the next up on my list is Waterbuck. Just wondering if there is anything that y’all would target for a first, and probably only, hunt in Africa?
I could make longer list, but with budget and timing restrictions of only one hunt of a lifetime:
Take kudu.
Longest horn in Africa, favorite of Ernest Hemingway, the first of spiral horn species.

Kudu- the one animal that I regret not hunting on my trip (also my first) to Africa...but, that gives me an excuse to go again!

:S Welcome:

It sounds menial, but a really good impala ram, they are iconic. And of course a zebra, no home is complete without a nice zebra rug.
Kevin is spot on. I would add a kudu. If it was me a buff, kudu, Zebra, Impala, Gemsbok, Water buck

Also please note: I took my first trip to Africa in a 2018 to hunt cape buffalo and hippo - it was a bucket list trip with my father. I figured it would be our first, last, only trip... I have now been on five safaris, and we booked the second one before the first was finished.

This is not an uncommon experience, many of us have sold away our worldly goods, and body parts to afford additional trips - it gets into your blood!

I’m pretty happy you said this, cause impala was one of the species that had really caught my eye while researching. It kinda seems the closest thing in Africa to whitetail, although I’ve seen a bunch of comparison to bushbuck as well

Thanks to all y’all for the suggestions. Definitely gonna add impala to the list. My hunting partner that’s going with me is going with only an eye for kudu, so I reckon I need to keep a look out after he gets his. Not too sure how I feel about zebra, given I grew up working with horses a lot so it seems a little weird

Just wanted to say thanks for the excellent customer service. Ordered some 9.3x62 brass and the delivery was a little short. An email through your website Contact Us link was replied to the next day with the tracking info for the correction. Good pricing coupled with great customer service will see returning customers every time. Thanks again!

I am righthanded, so not interested in the rifle, but I have a 375 RUM and 350 gr bullet loading data is very hard to come by. If you could reply with information regarding your loads I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Ray Boone, Leavenworth, WA
