Powder for 375 Ruger 270 Barnes LRX

Just wanted to update everyone. My final load arrived to the following which lines up with the CDS dial I had existing in my scope. For some reason it’s a 185 ttsx for a 338 federal at 2810 fps but it lines up perfectly out to 363 yards. I’ve attached photos of the chrono and groups at 100 and 363 yards. This will be my one bullet gun for Africa for everything up to cape buffalo

83 grains rl16 2.425” coal. hornady brass. Wolf lrm primer. 1/2”-3/4” groups. 2760 fps

RL17 is the best powder for the .375 Ruger, hands down, not even close. I cant find anymore, so Im shooting Win760 now. But with RL17, I got a 300 grain all the way to 2700 with no sticky bolt, and no flattened primers. I backed it back down to 2595. My extreme spread was 3 fps.

It’s very temp sensitive especially compared to rl16 and varget which is why it doesn’t interest me much. I hunt from 30 degrees to 100. My load with the 279 has absolutely 0 pressure signs. I could push it to probably 2850-3000 but I have no interest given the recoil and groups I’m getting now.

I was developing my buffalo load, so I wanted to see if Africa heat would cause problems. Maybe because my load was in the 57k-58k psi range, is why I didn't have issues?

For sure you are under max. 2600 with a 300 brainer is warm but not super hot. You shouldn’t have any issues and for Buffalo it won’t matter much. For me the 270 is my one bullet solution for all of Africa for the game I want to hunt. Because my shots could be out to 300+ velocity consistency matters to me hence temp sensitivity. Not just about being over pressure. For your purposes sounds like it really
Won’t matter much though so I’d stick with what you have.

I am using H414 with 270 grain sierra and 300 grain TSX bullets. I decide to match the Hornady DGX load out of my barrel.
74 grains of H414 gets me an average of 2552 out of my 23” barrel with the 300 grain TSX.
My extreme spread is 27fps.
Accuracy is 1.025 MOA at 75 yards.
Pretty sure the stringing shots were due to rubber on the front rest of the lead sled breaking. I strapped the rifle in extra tight.

I know it’s not on your list, but hands down best powder for a Barnes 270 grain in a 375 Ruger is Big Game, 2700+ fps with a listed book max, not by-guess-and-by-golly primer flatness and sticky extraction. Barnes data shows 81.5 grains for
2825 gps from a 24” barrel. The 20” barrel of my Ruger Alaskan averaged 2723 fps. Big Games is very temp stable and readily available as well.

Big game is a double based spherical powder. It is going to be temp sensitive for sure. Much more than rl16 which is an extruded powder with coatings.

I’m not aware of any published load data for RL16 for either fhe 375 H&H or 375 Ruger. Where did you find pressure tested data?

Big game is a double based spherical powder. It is going to be temp sensitive for sure. Much more than rl16 which is an extruded powder with coatings.

Big Game is known to be much less temperature sensitive than most spherical powders.

None other than John Barsness has done much experimentation with it and has access to pressure testing labs and has found it to be almost the equal of the Hodgdon Extremes when it comes to temperature sensitivity city.

Ok, found some Speer data for 375 Ruger and RL16. Other than its temperature stability, one other nice thing about Big Game is how the spherical grains pack into a case with little or no compression.

I live the load being a bit compressed. More consistent ignition. It prevent the bullet of a heavy caliber from seating the bullet deeper under recoil in the magazine. I found I do not even need to crimp with this load I'm using. The bullets to not change seating depth under recoil. With a non compressed load and without a can or muzzle brake I'd absolutely be willing to be your see the bullet getting seated deeper by recoil and need a decent crimp on the bullet which typically reduces accuracy and works brass more.
