As a right-hander who shoots left the majority of the time, I like ambidextrous rifles. So I'm a fan of single-shot falling-blocks & their simplicity. They work really well for a lot of the hunting that I do.

I often start hunting in the fall with my my Winchester 1885 Traditional Hunter in 405 Win or Browning 1885 in 44 Magnum because the regulations allow it during the primitive season.

My Ruger No. 1A in 303 British is a sentimental favorite & a great choice for where I hunt.

It's nice to be able to open a safe & grab a single-shot or a single-shot or another single-shot. Winchester, Browning, Uberti, Ruger? I've got options in seven different chamberings to choose from.

I really like the compact size of my Ruger No. 1 RSI chambered in 275 Rigby. Shooting Rigby ammo (aka 140gr Hornady InterLock SP) with a 2-7x33 scope, it works really well as a deer rifle.

I've taken the most deer with my Ruger No. 1A in 6.5x55 shooting 140gr Partitions. Either I've been very lucky or this rifle excels at dropping deer in their tracks because zero tracking is usually required.

I absolutely love the 1885 low and hiwalls. The are pure simplicity and class. Mine is a slick as snot on glass.
Mine is a lowall made in 1897 with the flat spring. Originally a 44-40 with a half octagon half round barrel. The bore was rusted and pitted so I had it sleeved with a 22K Hornet barrel. Firing pin was re-bushed and a new bit of wood put on it and custom handmade scope mount. Mounted with a 3.5-10X44 meopta. My favourite load is a 40gn VMax, 12gn 2205, br4 primer and coal length of just under 1.9". Velocity 2,900fps and three shots can be covered by the base of a Hornet case at 100 yards.
If'n my budget could afford it I would have a Browning hiwalls in 25-06 in a heart beat.
Still looking for a CVA single shot in 25-06 with a 26" tube tho.

This is my #1 on 7mm mag. Was also handed down to me by my father. My father bought it in 91’ my first deer season, been in love with it at first sight!! Now she’s mine and it will take a Northeastern buck off its hooves. Handles like a dream. Has a Canjar set trigger. Hope to send it to RJ Renner and have it refinished , new barrel.

I wasn’t going to post this because it is not a hunting gun. Thick side Hiwall, Douglas premium barrel, bushed firing pin, repro Stevens Soule Sight, double set trigger, 32-40. Reclaimed 219 zipper critter rifle.

Every Browning 1885 chambered in 25-06 that I've seen has been a B-78 with a right-handed cheek weld on the butt stock. Unfortunately it's not a great choice for someone like me who prefers to shoot left-handed. I have eight single-shot falling-blocks in a mixture of 1885's & Ruger No. 1's (6.5x55, 275 Rigby, 303 British, 9.3x74r, 375 H&H, 44 Mag & 405 Win) so I'm trying to convince myself that this is enough. But I do like them a lot so I find them hard to resist.

As @odonata said, the no 1 makes a wonderful brush, stalk, and tight quarters gun.

Here's my Ruger no 1 in 308.
This is my primary deer rifle. I'm somewhere north of 25 whitetail and a couple dozen pigs with this weapon.
It likes 150gr accubonds over varget.

Jard trigger at 1.5 lbs is light and crisp and far better than the clunky factory unit but it is a fiddly install.

Have you tried CFE223 with the accubonds.
A max load of 50 behind the 150 gn accubond give 2,900+ fps in my sons 08 with sub half moa groups. That's in a big standard Howa
WARNING this load was safe in my rifle only work up from a few grains below.

Yes, it does, I am planning to have it rebored to 6,5x57R or 7x65R in the future.

You can deal with this "weird neck wall thickness" by reloading it with Redding bushing neck sizing dies. Just take a 6mm Remington die and use the appropriate bushing.
Cases last for ever....
5,6x57R is a great cartridge....

I took The Dakota #10 243 Win to the range the last couple of days.

I shot some factory ammo and reloads.

Most everything I shot was under a 1" group for 3 shots at 100 yards!
I'm very impressed that it shoots so easily.

I'm not crazy about the rifle not having an ejector like the Ruger #1 but rather an extractor. With that it's a bit of a pain to operate at the range.

But beautiful rifle that seems to shoot well! I will be fun to hunt pests with....
