Why no love for the .358 Win?

They were selling 9.3x62 barrels for the Garand up here in Ontario. Not a light and limber package maybe, should be able to put the hurt on, though.

Speak of the...

My grate nephew in law told me tonight he picked up a nice 98 in 9x57.
And he is thinking of re barrel it to a 358w
I told him I would see about shooting it like it was before I would redo it
But it would be a nice woods rifle especially with a 18 in barrel or so

Outstanding group! Sounds like the 358 likes to shoot most 225 class bullets to similar points of impact given everything else stays the same. Good to know! I’ve read alot of good things about the woodleighs and the north forks but haven’t been able to locate any here in the states. I’m sure those loads will bring the hunt together for rick when he goes to Nimibia. I can only dream to have an African hunt under my belt someday.

What state are you in.
Stop dreaming and start saving and you will be in Africa before you know it..
There's a new Woodleigh dealer in the states.
Ricks lucky I'm visiting him in October and taking him 2 boxes of Woodleigh to have some fun with.

Bob, I’m in Oregon. No idea how much it would cost but it would be amazing to go hunting there someday. Hopefully sooner than later. Rick is very lucky to have you as a friend.

It is cheaper to hunt Africa than you think.
There are many good deals from benefactors on this site.
If you don't want trophies you could always do a cull hunt that is a cheaper option then and a trophy or two if you need to.
It was cheaper for me to hunt Namibia than hunt buffalo in my home country of Australia. So Namibia was a no brainer for me and a decision I have NEVER regretted.
@Rick HOlbert is a great bloke the same as a lot of people in this site.

I will have to look into this! A cull hunt sounds like a great place to start. Thank you Bob.

I am definitely enjoying being a part of this site. I will continue to stick around.

Do yourself a favour. Don't wait until one day I will do it. By then one day will arrive and it will be to late. Start researching and go. No use dying with regrets. Life is for living I'm sure you will find a way to fullfill your dream.

Wise words Bob! You’re not kidding. I’ll look into it.

I love my new lady, a Husky 146 FN98 in 9.3x57. Unmolested, untapped, no attachments, no drama. Straight off the shelf 1940. I'll do a write-up when I get everything squared away, but honestly, I don't think anyone that has ever used a 9.3x57 would even consider changing to .358 Win.
I like her far more than the x62....if I'm going out for a walk, I'll take the x57 from now on....she can kick out some 300 gr. solids herself....but with gentle finesse and at the magic velocity.

I started that bracket with 9.3X57, then 9.3X62, 9.3X64 and 9.3X74R... then started on the .35 Cals... .35 Rem, .356 & .358 Win, .350 Rem Mag, .35 Whelen, .358 Norma, .358-375 Ruger. Now? I have downsized it all, I have one 9.3X64 Brenneke, one .358 Win, one .35 Whelen and one .350 Rem Mag. So people do go from the 9.3's to .35's. Personally, I think 250 grain bullets are optimal in this bracket of cartridges, maybe 286 in the bigger ones.

I have a 9.3x62 so I wouldn’t trade my 358 win, but if I come across a 9.3x57 I would probably buy it as I love the thump.

I do love the thump as well. Given that my ranges never exceed iron sight capability and never will, (I'm not a scope person, in 50 years have never needed one and I wear corrective lenses), it's good for me. I will say, if I ever needed more range, I might change my perspective. I've always kept things at the magic 2050-2150, that 100fps window. If I need more, I simply go larger. That's just me, and due to never needing more range. The 9.3x57 may be the smallest package of a 'do it all' I've EVER come across. The 300 at 2,170fps exceeds the 'original' 9.3x62 factory load of 286 at 2,175fps, the load that Taylor made note of for all African game. It's good to hear the thumps, instead of having to use more time in between shots for recovery. Faster, safer. Some will argue that the other way and propose more velocity, I suppose it's an age-old debate.

Old thread I know, but per an Alaskan contact the .358 Win - chambered in a handy old-school lever-action - is still popular up there for taking big critters in close, thick brush and in the timbered areas.

The .35-cal cartridges generally have a rep for punching above their weight class. In the field they kill out of all disproportion to what their “paper ballistics” would suggest vis-a-vi other cartridges.

Writer Gregor Woods, author of “Rifles and Cartridges for Africa,” stated he couldn’t understand why he didn’t see more American hunters bringing 35-cal rifles to Africa for large PG, specifically naming the .35 Whelen and the .350 Rem Magnum for that purpose. He felt they would perform just as well as the ubiquitous Holland .375.

Happy family ….
