Thinking about a .300 win mag

Back in 2009, I wanted a new .30 caliber elk rifle and debated between a .300 Win mag or a .300 Wby.

I only shoot my handloads, so once I get the brass, the cost per cartridge between tham is negligible. Brass for the .300 Win is more plentiful, but I chose the .300 Wby.

My hunting loads for it for just about anything that I want to hunt with it will group 3 Barnes 180 gr TTSX bullets under an inch at 100 yards at 3248 fps and delivering 4215 ft lbs of energy.

For bigger animals I also built a .375 RUM that will also shoot 3-shot 100 yd moa groups with several different bullets. 300 gr Nosler Partitions leave the muzzle of it at 2898 fps with 5593 fp of energy.

Both myself and the DOD have considerable respect for the 300 Win Mag (Long Action). The 200 to 225 grain bullets are quite enough to drop any plains game in Africa and with Ballistic Coefficients (BC-G1) from .597-.777, you can reach out an touch even the most skittish species. If Bergara HMR Pro comes in LH would be my first choice. Tikka T3 would be my second. I love the Bargara stock adjustment flexibility. You should always consider the availability of ammo in the countries you hunt. Not that any airline would ever loose your ammo box and not your weapon.

Blaser R8. It changes peoples lives!
100%
Had the kudu of a lifetime at under 150m. The bolt wouldn’t close properly due to dust and grit getting between the little “fingers” of the bolt head.
I always have the bolt open on the back of the truck.

Sent the Tupperware down the road and only stick to proper bolt actions now.
Never had the problem again.
Especially when using 98 type actions, that were designed to work in any conditions.

Why in the world would you keep the bolt open on an R8? With the decocker it can safely stay loaded at all times. You caused the problem and it is likely to happen in some form or fashion with a traditional bolt action. Close the bolt!

Interesting. I have never heard of such a rule in all my travels.

I don’t mind the open bolt on a vehicle.
About 20 years ago, while hunting in the Kalahari, one of the guys in the back of the vehicle had an AD.
Luckily nobody got hurt.

I'm also surprised by this. I'd also be concerned for any debris to fall into the chamber and get lodged in the barrel, interfere with the floor plate, etc. Not probable, but I'd guess possible.

No doubt solvable by a quick visual check....but then again I've seen a few outfitters that don't allow a loader chamber until right before the shot. To each their own I guess.

Check out the Beretta BRX1 it is switchable from right to left hand.It is available in 300wm and you can buy interchangeable barrels in 243,6.5 creedmore and 308.There are many videos on YouTube on these that are very informative.

I highly recommend a Ruger Hawkeye Hunter in .300 Winchester Magnum. One of the best .300 Winchester Magnums off-the-shelf which money can buy today.

I'm thinking about a left-handed 300 Win Mag. Does anyone have any ideas?
300 Win mag...........30.06 on steroids...........Awesome cartridge will demolish all African plains game and any leopard. I've seen hippos shot in the head with them and easily killed. My PH told me to bring mine for a croc hunt with TSX bullets.

Left handed that depends on your budget and tastes in rifles.
