I drew a tag to hunt anterless moose in a muzzleloader specific winter hunt near Fairbanks this year. The season runs the full months of December and January, and any anterless moose is legal. Alaska allows modern muzzleloaders but no optics in the special muzzleloader hunts. I have been hunting with flintlocks for over thirty years so that is what I used. I shot a good sized bull that had shed his antlers at about 125 yards with my .60 caliber longrifle loaded with 120 grains 3F and .595" patched round ball. The moose was standing perfectly broadside, ball went through muscle of both shoulders, cut a rib on entry and exit, took out top of heart, and was found stuck in off side hide. Moose went about 20 yards and was down for keeps. I didn't even bother to reload. I have shot quite a lot of game with my flinters from squirrels to bear, but this was my first flintlock moose.

That is really great!
Congratulations!
I have a rekindled interest in traditional muzzle loading but don’t yet own a flint lock.
I need to change that…

125 yards, open sights, and single shot muzzle loader!
Quite an achievement!
Congrats!

Thanks guys ! I was pretty happy. Flintlocks in Alaska can be quite a challenge a lot of the year but in the winter not so much because it is below freezing so no liquid water and fairly dry with low humidity. Wet warm snow and rain is much more difficult. With that being said, I did keep a leather cover "cows knee" over lock until I was ready to shoot.

i have a TC big boar .58 caplock i put it in a renade stock for the double set triggers. i would like to do a moose hunt in alsk.

@roklok
I had the pleasure/ misfortune of firing a Hawken percussion cap 58 cal with a 600gn Minnie with the same charge.
I can say with great certainty with that curved steel but plate it sure got your attention when you touched old Betsy off.
Holy shit, lit me up like the 4th of July. I wasn't expecting that. I was told he was working up a hunting load for pigs. After seeing my reaction he backed it off to around 80 grains.

@roklok - very nice “Traditional” hunt, and good shooting with a Round Ball !! My friend competes in the Blackpowder World Championships in Friendship Indiana each June & September. Most of the shooting is at steel silhouette targets at various ranges 25-50-100-200 yrds etc.. the size of the steel targets vary but he’s told me that the “round ball” is the most difficult to be consistently accurate with….and I think that applies to shooting a round ball out of a rifled barrel (the muskets shoot all over the place).
You must have done a lot of experimenting with load development to be confident to take that on a Moose hunt ——- impressive !!

I do like those T/Cs, have a few of them myself. I started hunting with a T/C Renegade flintlock in 1991 in Pennsylvania's flintlock deer season. Killed 13 deer with that T/C flintlock before I "upgraded" to a .54 caliber longrifle I built. That .58 should definitely do the trick on a moose.
