The Kwando is a special place. I’ve got very fond memories of a 1989 hunt that included that river. Lots of buffalo and lions there when I hunted that region of Botswana.

It truly is! Home to some monster crocodiles too. As it's a far less crowded waterway than the Zambezi.

I absolutely loved it. One of my all time favorite hunts. The amount of game we saw was incredible. We were on the Namibia side but Botswana was the other bank of the river. We actually saw and heard lions while we were there. Didn’t see many crocs but I’m sure they are there. The amount of elephants, hippos and buffalo that we saw was absolutely amazing. I’ll be back in that area again next year looking for another buffalo and an elephant.

Thormalen and Cochran, not sure if we will be on the Kwando but we will be in the Caparivi somewhere. Looking forward to getting back into that part of Africa again.

This is what we knew as the ''muddy pool''

Not that impressive really - but significant in my childish memory - therefore more relevant than adult experiences (of which I'm sure we all have many)

Anyway ....

I and a childhood friend were out shooting - each with our cherished (and they were cherished) .22LRs

I was bet that I wouldn't walk across the old bridge at the far end of the pool - there remained only the twin parallel steel girders - you can see them in the pic

I walked on the girders, slipped and fell in

As I knew the pool was full of croc I was swimming before hitting the water

My splashing soaked the red loam banks and I couldn't gain sufficient purchase to get out

My mate - un-fazed - held out the barrel of his .22 which I grabbed hold of - he then hauled me out

''Bugger me'' - he exclaimed upon my safe retrieval - ''my rifle was loaded!''

Further examination revealed that indeed it was

Furthermore he had not troubled himself with the safety catch

My luck ran out some weeks later when I laid my rifle upon the ground to retrieve some spilt ammo

His sister (who was accompanying us) picked it up and pulled the trigger hitting me in the upper thigh

But that - as the say - is a different tale

Very cool! I learned first hand just how tough waterbucks are, they will keep fighting even with a picture perfect placed shot.

We have that same Bergara here in the US but it’s marketed under the CVA brand for whatever reason, still made by Bergara but the single shot Bergaras are marketed under the CVA name.

This was my first Africa safari with NKWE Safaris in Botswana. The bull eland was taken the morning of our first day, one shot at about 100 yards. I thought not too shabby for my first African animal. Then, on the fifth day, the kudu was 150 yards and anither one shot drop. My wife saw the pic of the kudu and thought he should be a shoulder mount. The wife is always right!
