Hey Guys,
What are your thoughts on velocity for the 400 gr Barnes solid in 416 Remington for tuskers. I don't like the idea of going max velocity with a heavily compressed load. I am thinking 2350- 2400 fps. What say you all ?

A 400gr bullet at 2000fps or better should work fine. The 450/400 NE 3" is a fine cartridge and that's all it does.

I used the Barnes 400 Gr. flat nose solids in my 416 Rigby on two Elephants. Worked great with good penetration. Broadside heart/lung shots went completely through the Bulls. Insurance shots in the back while the Elephant was on the ground were also went completely through.

You’ll be fine at 2,350-2,400 with a quality 400 grain solid. I shoot 79.0 grains of Reloader 15 and get 2,380 IIRC. I would consider a flat nosed solid though, like a Cutting Edge, Trophy Bonded Sledgehammer or Nosler. Swift Breakaway solids are also good. Flat front solids have proven to penetrate better and straighter. Personally, I’d shoot any of these before I’d use a round nose solid of any brand. Stick to 400 grains no matter which one you choose.

what velocity?

My hunting partner last year in Zim used 400gr CEB Safari Solids at 2300fps with no penetration issues.

Used 400 gr Swift Breakaway out of my .416 RM on tuskless last year and was very happy with the performance. Bullet recovered from frontal brain
shot.

400Gr .416 caliber solids fired at 2350-2400 FPS is more than adequate for any body or brain shot on elephant (from all angles).

If I may make a small suggestion, the currently manufactured Barnes Banded Solids have round nosed. Instead, go for 400Gr Cutting Edge Bullets Safari Solids. They have a flat nose and will penetrate better, at acute angles.

do you know your velocity and how do you get those pics to load. Whenever I try to post a pic they won't finish loading

Velocity is at the 2380 - 2390 fps mark. A nice surprise was that they shot pretty much where my 400 gr barnes tsx were shooting so there was no sighting in after completing the buff hunt and switching bullets.
Took pictures and clicked attach files (bottom left on screen) and selected the pictures and uploaded.

Thanks. Yeah that's what I do , but they won't ever post after they load.

Are these the newer ones with the black plastic tips to help feeding?

I am righthanded, so not interested in the rifle, but I have a 375 RUM and 350 gr bullet loading data is very hard to come by. If you could reply with information regarding your loads I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Ray Boone, Leavenworth, WA

Hello - I was looking at your post from several years ago regarding the Winchester 300 H&H. Any chance you still have the lefty M70 300 H&H for sale?
Thank you, Mike

An excellent AH member right here! I had a fantastic transaction with Hornedfrogbbq (I was the seller). His communication was first rate, payment was extremely fast, and I would have absolutely no reservations at all dealing with him again. Thank you, F!
