Cartridge Battle. 416 Rigby vs 416 Remington. Pick your side.

Title pretty much says it all. Of the two 416s, which would you prefer. Does the nostalgic 100+ year history of the Rigby beat the much younger Remington alternative. Or does the cheaper factory ammo and ease of making cases of the Remmy make enough difference to seriously consider it? For me its really hard to pick sides, probably just buy one of each

Tough choice, both are good rounds.

What you decide on will be your middle bore rifle. I am reading you have to go 450 or larger for big bore.

I am looking at the 416 rigby.

on the outside chance that you are not a crack shot. and while hunting in Africa, ammo will be available for the 416 rigby. :beer:

Are you kidding me?!? I can shoot the wings off a fly at 300 yards off hand with any rifle! And then I always wake up lol

Also one thing I forgot about the Remmy, its case diameter is smaller, even with the belt, than the Rigby. Wouldn't that potentially allow for an extra round in the magazine?

The 416 Rigby i was looking at had 1 in and 5 down.

I guess I own a .416 Rem, so I already made my choice , but seriously they are both great calibers in their own right. I found the .416 Rem to be a little cheaper and that is why I went that route. I bought some of the last new brass that Remington made for the caliber...I'm hoarding brass .

I'm with you Enysse, I own a Rem and my father a Rig. Line is drawn and I got my heels dug in.
Came across a box of Rem ammo just today at a local gun shop for $48 flat. Guess someone asked to have it ordered and never picked it up...

there is only one the .416 rigby. i am biased of course having had 4 rifles in this calibre. why anyone would want one of those small case colonial versions i dont know.....i would even have a .404 jeffery before the remington specimen, and as for the weatherby ...nah cant even go there. :uptosome::stirring::heh:

well smaller case but with a lot higher pressures......so maybe trying to cram too much into too small a case :hmmmer: yup sounds like modern day efficiency :biggrin2:

I don't have a good come back for that one. There is a lot of controversy about which is more efficient and powerful...supposed it's the .416 Rem :hmmmer:, could be the Remington media team :thinking:.

When loaded full throttle, the Remmy cant touch the Rigby, no way. The Rigby is essentially the Weatherby case without the belt. Ballistic equals. The Rigby of course gets its 2400x400gr at lower pressure than the Remmy, that was the point of the big case. Same as the .404 (my fav!), big case, less pressure, good velocity.

The big cases triumph the small cases everytime don't they? I won't argue that the .416 Rigby is the king, but you will pay for it too, $$$$$. I got to had it to Remington though, their invention of the .416 Rem started the .416 Rigby resurgence....which I think is great.

I went with the rigby, at the time I was not too concerned by which I got, in fact I favoured the Remington but only because Winchester chambered it and I like the fit of the Winchester rifles.
To cut a long story short, the dealer stuffed me around a bit and I chatted to another shop who had just brought in some cz's and I tried the rigby at the range and decided that it would be the one.
I don't think there is too much in it ballistically for factory ammo.
The price of ammo does get a bit much sometimes, $200 for a box of 20 Norma's is on the steep side, I think that the Rem ammo was almost half the price.
Both types of ammo were readily available when I was looking to buy, haven't asked about Remington ammo for a long time but I would guess that most of the gun shops here stock it.

For nostalgic reasons and the fact that I live in Africa and know what is readily available,I would pick the Rigby.The 103 gr water capacity of the Remington shell against the 130 of the Rigby puts the Rigby in a different class for the reloader,especially when loading heavy for caliber bullets like the 450 grains.I must add that the Remington and for that matter the Ruger are great calibers,however if you add the .404 I will only have one choice,and all the .416's will be out off the equation.

Well I shot my friend's Ruger RSM .416 Rigby and I did like it, they have risen in price over the years. So if one magically showed up at the door, it would be more than welcome.

Well, I guess the comparisons between cartridges have been going on for years, especially when it comes to "newer" versions. I had the same decision to make a couple of months ago between the .416 Rigby and the Remington. I think you will be splitting hairs choosing between the two. I went with the Rigby, probably because of the name and the history that goes with it, and that it has served so many PH's well over decades of safaris.
The factor that basically sealed the deal was the ability of the Rigby to operate at way lower pressures as compared to the Rem. Mag.
I can tell you that my .416 Rigby is by far my favorite rifle in my safe.
