I think that we are waaay past ridiculous. This shouldn't even qualify as an animal in the estate category. SCI needs a new category for human engineered freaks. Do you think that they let it out of the corral before it was shot?

I'd be embarrassed to admit that I had actually paid money to shoot something like that.

Do you think that people shooting things like this have issues of inadequacy like those ascribed to men who drive corvettes? :barmy:

I think it's animals like this that will end hunting. The non-hunting population which is growing by the day, will look at this and say this isn't hunting...and they will get pissed off because we were breeding animals un-naturally.

I have been lucky enough to score some wild deer sheds that look like these, of course nothing close to 600" of horn, but well over 120" on each side.
But I agree, farm raised genetically enhanced deer need their own category if any, I mean we don't count world records for steroid enhanced atheletes

They are in their own category and this was not passed off as a wild animal.

The original intent of SCIs estate category was to recognize animals from legitimate self propagating introduced populations such as on the big Texas ranches. I don't know the story on this one but I think there is a very high chance this is a likely a pen raised animal that was turned out for "sport". This is happening more and more and I agree with you guys it is detrimental to our sport. All things being equal if the genetic freaks are introduced to a property and then the next generation is hunted, I have no issue with the estate category. If we are just going to raise them in pens, score their sheds then let them out in a fenced area, regardless of size, for the required amount of time to allow entry as estate animals then "hunt" them when they have no real fear of humans... well that's another thing altogether.

I don't know that is the case here but the vast majority of the time that is how the true goliaths come to be - selective breeding.

It's already very ridiculous. I would just as soon hunt, and I use the term loosely, a Holstein or a horse before that thing.

Of course, there is also the Sprinbok thing. The "grand slam" of "species" like the white, black and copper. I don't want to hunt any of those either.

In the past, some have referred to them incorrectly as species or subspecies. They are no more that than a German Shepherd dog or a Cocker Spaniel would be a different species or subspecies.

I am not interested in "hunting" domestic animals.

I'm very familiar with the "Slam".... I understand the color variations of the Springbok. However, I'm not sure I'd consider them domesticated animals by any stretch. To each there own though. That's what great about the forum, everyone can speak their mind.

I know some "old timers" that feel the same way as you do. I'm not sure I will go after the slam? I will say I like hunting springbok though. They taste great too!

They have certainly been bred to prevalence but they did come from naturally occurring specimens with recessive genes. How many people prefer their "Black" bears to be brown, cinnamon, chocolate, or blonde? answer - as any outfitter will tell you, most.

Back to the Springbok, the normal appearing cape springbok are as much of a science experiment as any color variant, since as any good game manager knows, if you introduce Kalahari Springbok genes you get bigger horns. So don't fool yourself by thinking that just because something looks "normal" that it is unaltered. That Copper or White springbok could be of truer Cape Springbok lines than the next "normal" colored one you shoot.

The whitetail that stated this thread is also pure whitetail, bred not for color but bigger horns just like the Cape Springbok you will find on far more game ranches than some would care to admit.
