To Sling or not to Sling a Dangerous Game Rifle, That is the Question

On my first safari, PG only I started out using a sling. After day 2 I removed and never put back on. Where we were hunting I was carrying more unslung than slung because of thick brush. On my DG hunts I have never used a sling. I carry cradle in my arm or over my shoulder muzzle behind me if no one is behind me. Even now on PG hunts I use no sling. It always seems in way at the wrong time. I am a big guy and can carry my rifle all day without any fatigue on my arms.

It's a personal choice. Do what you think is right for you. I keep a sling with QD releases and scope cover/bikini in my day/fanny pack. They are available and used as needed. On an Alaska brown bear hunt most people will probably use them most of the time.

All my rifles are equipped with slings and QD swivels. I also feel it's a much safer way to carry a rifle in a group than the "African" carry. With practise, a slung rifle can be brought to aim very quickly, and also quicker than "African" carry. Getting a sling snagged on brush doesn't seem to be a problem for me, but I do prefer the quick adjustable slings that can be shortened up when carrying the rifle by hand and in the thick stuff. That's not an option with most "cobra" style slings, and one reason I don't like that style of sling much.

Thanks again for your support on the Rhodesian Shotgun thread. From the amount of "LIKES" it received, it appears there was only ONE person who objected. Hes also the same one who continually insisted on interjecting his posts that werent relevant to the thread.
