My Africa taxidermist sent me the final invoice on Friday. I paid the full amount via credit card and realized the total charged was 2.5% higher than what I authorized. When I emailed the taxidermist, they replied that the exchange rate had changed due to corona virus and oil volatility. Is it common for something like this to happen? It wasn’t a lot of money but 2.5% can add up.

It sounds like a foreign transaction fee from your credit card company not an additional fee from the taxidermist. Certain cards have them and others don’t.

All credits cards charge 2.5-3% to the merchant. Some merchants add this fee to the bill because you didn’t pay by wire. That is my guess. It is not the exchange rate. It has hovered around 14 rand to usd for most of the year. It is now 15.9 rand to USd. If anything the price should have gone down.

I always pay by wire. The only fee is the wire charge from the bank and that is minimal. No add ons from the other end and no hidden charges.

Thanks again for your support on the Rhodesian Shotgun thread. From the amount of "LIKES" it received, it appears there was only ONE person who objected. Hes also the same one who continually insisted on interjecting his posts that werent relevant to the thread.
