.277 Sig Fury for hunters

I suspect its use will be for specialised units only; my enquiries have not come up with anything concrete as ar as Australia is concerned.

The other proposal for Australia is a 300 BlackOut as a close quarter weapon, replacing the MP5/compact 5.56 weapons. 190 grain A/P bullets @ 1100 fps?

277FURY...for the prepper game animals out there strapped up with level 4 body armor. Sound like a good selling point.

Oh good, someone caught on that I'm talking about its merits as a hunting round.
I believe Blaser will release a .277fury barrel for the R8 with a cautionary note it's only to be used on steel actions.

Any thoughts on whether this would be a better cartridge for hunting if it's chambered in a suitable rifle with a 22" or 24" barrel?

Whats the potential of the civilian version .277Sig Fury for hunting?

Is the potential velocity a game changer for flatter trajectory etc?

Whats it's potential (6.8x51) Sig as a sniper rifle in the same space where a 7.62x51 is generally used? Any great ballistic advantage with drop, drift or retained energy, penetration from a designated sniper rifle?

CBH, it’s like a 270WSM in a smaller rifle package with a 16 in barrel burn. Extra inches won’t add much as it’s using fast burning powder (hence the high pressure). This is about getting magnum performance in a modified SR-25/AR-10, SCAR-Heavy or FAL platform.

Maybe it’s good for building a light weight goat gun, if you really wanted to push extremes. Maybe goats will start rocking class IV armor. :E Shrug: However, a 270 WSM, 270 Weatherby, etc. will do the same thing (or better) in a 22-26 inch barrel.

27NOSLER, 270WBY, 270WSM, 6.8WST, 270RUM (wildcat) and a few other cartridges out there can push a .277 caliber 130-150 grain bullet to speeds beyond 3000 fps.

The benefit to hunters is if you want to do it with an extremely lightweight 16" barrel rifle with a suppressor (made of titanium of course), you can attain the same performance. As @BourbonTrail said...a high mountain goat rifle in 277FURY would be a good platform.

The price for this besides the cost of the rifle, ammo and suppressor (with tax stamp) is the barrel life. It will be critical to not shoot the barrel hot. Something the military isn't exactly known for, but as hunters we can limit or eliminate this practice.

I found this video from Ron Spomer. It's a year old but still very relevant.

So the U.S. Army has gone from the 30-06, to the 308 and then during Vietnam to the .223 for their main battle rifle. The .223 was chosen for it's lack of recoil, flatter trajectory and the lesser weight of the ammo. Seem like we're reversing direction. Why don't we just go back to the 30-06?

With some of the Rainbow woke people in the military to day they would need an assistant to carry one!.

It will be interesting to see how this cartridge reloads I'd love to dupe 270 wsm velocity in a compact high pressure cartridge and rifle configuration.

Richard Franklin about 15 years ago built what were essentially high pressure 300 wsm rifles. He used gain twist barrels on bat actions with 125 grain ballistic tips loaded around the 80k node. The bat action could take the pressure and the noslers could survive the launch speeds.

I have concerns about the high pressure cartridge with a two piece case. They have a tough set of requirements and this may be the only way to meet them. I guess going back to a full size battle rifle is not an option. My FAL long and heavy.
Going "full size" is always an option. Enter the HCAR from Ohio Ordnance Works chambered in 30-06. It pretty much a modern day BAR and is currently selling for around $7K in semi-automatic guise. Worth it in my book.

I know weight is a consideration along with extra energy on target.
Is it really the as t mich lighter than say a .308 or does it penetrate that much better than a 7mm-08?

I realise the performance from a short barrel is one of the main criteria but how does it stack up.

How would the, dare I say it 6.5cm stack up for ballistics in the required platform? Surely it's a lighter in weight.

That is very cool. I was thinking more along the lines of a FAL or G3.
POF has very cool AR 15 (yes i said 15) in 308. I could see potential there at 6.5 or so pounds.

I like this gun. We should definitely get back to the .30-06. We just need to step up our ammo drop game a little bit. I bet this little guy is a monster with a real compensator on the front. Flannel Daddy didn't do it justice.

Hi Joshlee0518 (please let me know if you are fine being addressed like that),

Thought I would drop you a PM. It is super exciting to plan a hunt and we are more than happy to assist you. Have you given any thought yet to which species you would like to take?

What do you hunt usually and which weapons/calibers are you using?

Look forward to swapping experiences and ideas.

Happy hunting - Daniel
