I shot a hyena with mine. It was a target of opportunity during a buffalo hunt. My rifle is a Granite Mountain lefty made by AHR. I'm liking the pics of the other 505s on this thread.
I have some scopes with illuminated reticles but haven't used that feature yet in daytime hunting. It makes sense to better see the aiming point on a cape buffalo. I did use it last year when I had the great fortune to shoot a leopard with Mokore in Zimbabwe at night. I had the illumination...
I am excited anticipating going again to this show. Unless you have an excellent memory, it helps to have a way to remember the table where you saw something interesting that you might want to go back to. I have had trouble finding it later.
I thought the first shot was too high also. I've been wondering why the bull dropped at all initially. Maybe why the PH said it was a good shot. Speculating that maybe it nicked a bony outer part of a vertebra and caused a temporary nerve shock?
I own a Searcy 470 that I bought from Butch used and it is well regulated. I haven't owned another double to compare it to though I have handled many at the SCI shows from back when Butch would exhibit there. I liked the balance of his rifles as much as any. I had a longer recoil pad put on...
That's the story I had heard about! Didn't realize he held the record. If his reflexes are that practised then it should be automatic even under that extreme stress. A Zim PH showed me this charge video at SCI shortly before it was posted here. He uses a diuble in .470. He holds 2 rounds in...
AZDave, interesting about getting 5 quick shots from a Ruger #1. I read about a learner PH shoot testing with one and doing quite well with it. It reinforces the point concerning practise. To help train better for my .470 double rifle, I would only use my side by side shotgun for months when...
I tried to practice working the bolt while the rifle is still in my shoulder and cannot master it. I am slower and find it awkward also. As to short stroking a bolt, I did it once at the Libby, MT big bore shoot during a "charging" water jug competition against another shooter where each...
I wonder if the dust flying to the side of the buffalo is just a solid exiting. I think the client and the PH each got 2 shots off apiece during the initial charge and they slowed it down and disoriented the bull. The client briefly ended up in the line of fire of the PH and wisely moved just...
Insane how the man shot the buffalo just as the "bull rider" was moved up and somewhat clear! It must've been a good shot like stated in the comments because the buff didn't have enough left to get to the shooter or the others. I'm glad they posted the story with it.
I use a Swarovski 1-6x24 on my 505 Gibbs that has held up for about 60 rounds of full power loads. I use an older Zeiss 1.5-4.5x18 on that same rifle for normal practise/ hunt backup that has held up for about 70 rounds. That scope lacks eye relief but I mounted it out far enough to work...
I have the same scope that came with a rifle I bought. It uses a 1/3 N battery. I wasn't able to find the battery it at grocery stores, etc but found them at a batteries plus store.
