Looking for advice. I am planning a future DG hunt and want to acquire the proper ammo to sight in, practice with and eventually hunt cape buffalo. The platform will be a Winchester model 70 Safari Express. The optics will be a red dot (brand unknown).

What do the experienced cape buffalo hunters suggest? Thank you in advance.

I'm a fan of the 400gr Swift A-frame. They have proven to be accurate and deadly.

Woodleigh Hydro as a solid, although much harder to come by.

I do not have a 416 Remington Magnum, and I have only taken a handful of Buffalo. In my little experience, 400gr Swift A frames in a 404 Jeffery and 300 gr A frames in a 378 Weatherby worked awesome. Others in our hunting groups have used Barnes TSX and the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw bullets. Everyone has their preference, but I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the modern bonded or mono-metal bullets. With the difficulty in obtaining ammo these days, I’d say get what is available that your rifle shoots reasonably well.

I’ve shot two buffalo with my Model 70 using factory loaded Federal Premium Safari 400 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claws. The first bull was ten steps and perfectly broadside. I hit him in the center of the shoulder and he dropped like a sack of potatoes. The second bull was 15 steps and quartering to. I hit him just in front of the shoulder and he went 35 yards and was stone dead when we walked up on him within 3-5 minutes of the shot. As you will soon discover, they are impossible to find unless ordered directly from Federal’s Custom Shop.

You have lots of options now. I used the 400 gr. Swift A-Frame for the first shot followed by two Barnes Monolithic Solids. Worked well. I would also use the Hornady DGX.

My No. 1 pick would be for 400Gr Swift A Frames. But this ammunition is now practically impossible to find on the market.

My choice (based upon the factory loaded offerings which are available on the current market) would then be for the 400Gr Barnes TSX. An absolutely devastating Cape buffalo bullet.
