Welcome to AH. Now tell us about gator hunting!

Gator hunting is a lot of fun. You have to apply for tags every year in state of Florida and it’s a lottery system. If you get them, they will be for a certain county. I got them in 2019 and 2020 but have not since. Typically hunt sunset into late night and use a side scan sonar/fish finder to locate them in an area. It’s like any other hunting, you find them in an area where you spot them in daytime and mark it on map. We use large surf fishing spinning combos to hook them and bring them to surface once located. It is like fighting a massive offshore fish. Once you get them to surface and near the boat, you have to have someone ready with a bang stick (we use 44mag) to hit them between the eyes. This is where it gets dangerous, and you need at least four guys in boat to do it safely, especially with big ones 12ft+. They are really angry, aggressive, and powerful animals when you have them hooked up. Only have gotten 7ft and 11ft so far. Hope to get another tag this year. We apply for them as a group and if one of gets one, we go get our Gator!

Hi Joshlee0518 (please let me know if you are fine being addressed like that),

Thought I would drop you a PM. It is super exciting to plan a hunt and we are more than happy to assist you. Have you given any thought yet to which species you would like to take?

What do you hunt usually and which weapons/calibers are you using?

Look forward to swapping experiences and ideas.

Happy hunting - Daniel
