I’m pretty sure this has been a thread previously on AH but I’ve been wanting to do a thread on our dogs and earlier I saw dogs being mentioned in another post, so I decided to stop postponing and get right in to it!

This little guy’s name is Sweep which translates to whip in English. He is a jack russell terrier (and yes, I know they are almost a standard addition for allot of hunters in South Africa). He is about seven years old, and he is my greatest companion, no matter the occasion. He is good on a track, but he seems to be slowing down a little these days. Other hobbies include sleeping, farting, and chasing skinks on the porch. He is useless when it comes to working cattle but does seem to enjoy just running behind them and feeling that he is helping, luckily it isn’t his “day job”.

Let’s see your hounds, be it a companion, a hunting dog, a working dog or just a moving ornament around the house that greets you every time you get home, feel free to share pictures and stories!

Kind regards.

Have always used Irish Terriers...gonna try a wire haired Fox Terrier next....the long leg version

My 9 month old pointing Yellow Lab, who I'm pretty sure has some Kangaroo blood, or just studies parkour while I'm away.
Have only had him out on doves so far, but he's coming along as a hunting dog. A happy boy to greet me when I get home, and exercise my arm to throw anything he can fetch.

I love dogs. I’m fond of the German Shepard. Owned and bred several…

It is truly rewarding to hunt with a dog. Whether it’s hunting with other peoples dogs in Africa, bird hunting here in the states or Canada, it just warms my heart! I used to belong to a group that trained and worked protection dogs in the SF area and that was an amazing part of my life too…

Recent Safari. We had a dog with us every day we hunted plains game:

Then the Girlfriend brought home this one (as an 8 week old pup).

She was holding her in the kitchen and Bo peed on my GF’s leg, she sat the pup down and Bo peed on the pup too!

To be honest I never cared for Pitbulls. A pitbull got loose and attacked my grandmother’s cat and then my grandmother when she tried to stop it. The neighbor was able to intervene and rescued them both!

Now little Luna has changed that. She’s one of the sweetest and smartest dogs I’ve know and trained. She pretty much owns all of us now!

Thanks for this post!

Sorry to hear about the one that got to your grandma, We used to have a couple of Pitbulls growing up and I really liked them! Seems like you got good animals in Africa but I think you might have missed some of the geese in Canada! Thanks for sharing!

I’ve hunted with PH’s dogs in Africa…

This is Teddy. He’s a Miniature Bull Terrier. They have been carefully bred over the past century to do absolutely nothing. Teddy is fine representative of the breed standard. He does love his people though.

Roley is the Black and Tan. Sassy is the brown dog. They are English Cocker Spaniels.

Here are our two dogs, Drogo the big Doberman and Lexi the little mut.

Drogo is 10 years old and on his last legs now. We're enjoying every moment with him that we still can. Lexi is of indeterminate age, probably 14+, and still acts like a little puppy.

I realize how hard the bug has bit. I’m on the cusp of safari #2 and I’m looking to plan #3 with my 11 year old a year from now while looking at my work schedule for overtime and computing the math of how many shifts are needed….
