Safari Season 2024 Has Started - Where We Going?

Not Africa this year however 2024 does kick off my North American safari. I plan on taking everything with my 375, 416 and 458.

Reloading for 416 Rigby in 2024

I found a local reloading site with component prices. The cheapest I'm seeing for bullets is the 350 grain Speers $1.21 ea, the Barnes 400 gr TSX are $2.38ea and the Hornady 400gr DGX are $2.78ea. I'm not seeing any 416 brass cases listed but I have over 100 factory rounds (Sako, Hornady &...

Reloading for 416 Rigby in 2024

I'm new to reloading but would like to start with 416 Rigby to reduce the cost of feeding this rifle. I've been paying approximately $12/round (Canadian) for factory ammo. If I were to buy all components today, what would the approximate cost per round work out to?

Do the 577 and 600 nitro really offer anything?

    Just to put some comparative numbers to this discussion on penetration: 700 NE - 1,000 grain - Section Density of .292 600 NE - 900 grain - Sectional Density of .334 577 NE - 750 grain - Sectional Density of .313 500 NE - 570 grain -Sectional Density of .313 .458 cal - 500 grain - Sectional...

    .416 Rigby & .458 Lott - Equal Recoil?

So I decided to play around with some of the variables using this ballistics calculator (https://shooterscalculator.com/recoil-calculator.php). Starting with the following variables as my baseline: Bullet Weight: 400 gr Bullet Velocity: 2,000 FPS Powder Charge Weight: 100gr Rifle Weight: 10lbs...

    .416 Rigby & .458 Lott - Equal Recoil?

So what seems to be the largest contributor to felt recoil? Powder charge? Velocity? Projectile weight? Max pressure? I know it's a combination of all of the above but curious if one input contributes more than the others. Where are the physicists here?

Have you completed the North American Super 10?

Same category animals count towards the Super Slam, how far are you into that? I plan on having a few "duplicates" as well in my journey. 1. White Tail & Mule Deer 2. Black Bear and Brown Bear 3. Mountain Caribou and Barren Ground Caribou. I'd love to hunt multiple sheep but I'm still...

    .416 Rigby & .458 Lott - Equal Recoil?

I'm curious if anyone has shot the 416 Rigby back to back to back with the 416 RemMag and 416 Ruger and could comment on if there is any perciebable difference between them? The 416 Ruger has what, 20 grains less than the Rigby?

    .416 Rigby & .458 Lott - Equal Recoil?

I had my 3 guns out for a shoot last weekend. My CZ in 375, my Model 70 in 458 WM and My CZ in 416 with the B and C stock. The 416 kicks less than the 458 WM shooting Hornady DGX but the CZ weighs atleast a pound heavier with rings and scope. It would be interesting to shoot a 458 Lott in the...

Have you completed the North American Super 10?

I have a few buddies that live and hunt in SK. I was assuming that non-resident Canadians could hunt with a local SK resident to get around the guide system, similar to other provinces. I'm not seeing that detail in the reg summary though.

I have a fairly aggressive plan kicking off this year. 2024 - DIY deer, black bear and Moose. I hunt these 3 every year so If I don't get one this year I will have reoccuring hunts each year until I'm successful. 2025 - Guided elk hunt in Alberta 2026 - Guided caribou hunt in Northern...

    My first 416 finally!

Yup, pretty light for a 416 or even a 375. My Ruger Guide Gun in 338WN weighs 8.1 lbs naked, you'd think they'd bump the African up to around the 9lbs mark. My 416 weighs 10.5lbs and it's still quite...lively haha. You going to add a scope and rings? Mercury pad?
  21. N

    My first 416 finally!

The Hawkeyes are a nice sensible rifle, 416 Ruger is the cheapest ammo of the 416's. What does your rifle weigh I know they are notoriously light for caliber but Ruger has been gradually increasing the weight on them over the years.

    .416 Rigby & .458 Lott - Equal Recoil?

Is 81 grains the standard powder charge for 458 Lott? If so, and if 100 grains is standard for the 416 Rigby, there is less than 10ft-lbs of felt recoil between the two out of the same weight rifle. 67.60 Vs. 76.69. I assumed the Lott had leagues more recoil over the 416's. Would be...

416 Ruger VS 416 Rem Mag

They have virtually the same ballistics. The Ruger will do it in a standard length action with slightly less chamber pressure than the RemMag. 416 Ruger ammo appears to be the cheaper of the two but not as widely available, and only produced by Hornady. I think it really comes down to what...

Straight-pulls other than the R8 that offer Dangerous Game cartridges?

I know that the Blaser R8 can be chambered in anything from .22lr to 500 Jeffery (including .375, 416 and 458 offerings) and it's not an uncommon sight on safari these days. Do any of the other modern straight pulls offer the same DG cartridges? I've been looking into the Merkel Helix and it...

Finally, my Heym 89b, 577 NE

I'm trying to picture how small of a slice in the market the .577NE and 600NE consist of. Dangerous game cartridges in general already seem to be on the decline, I imagine calibers .375 and up make up 1% of the total ammo market? 577/600 the top 1% of that?

Would a 450 grain .458 Win Mag be a perfectly acceptable standard for elephant?

I've always read that the 480grain bullets were the perfect compromise between weight and velocity for the .458 WinMag. That would have a S.D. of .327. Also side note, as someone who doesn't reload, what is the max powder charge (number of grains) that a 458 WinMag can contain before it's...

    .416 Rigby & .458 Lott - Equal Recoil?

I always thought the standard load of the Lott was 500gr @ 2300 and the 416 Rigby 400gr @ 2400 fps? You get a bit more of a contrast when you plug in those numbers. 67.6 ft-lbs vs 81.7ft-lbs. What this tells me is that a 10lbs rifle doesn't appear to be heavy enough for either the 416 or 458...

    .416 Rigby & .458 Lott - Equal Recoil?

Never shot a Lott but I do have a 9lbs 458 WinMag and say that standard 416 loads recoil about the same as the full power 458 loads....however my 416 weights 10.5lbs. So maybe?

Wanted Sako Brown Bear In 416 Rigby I Live In Ontario Canada

Gotcha. I would personally keep the 450 for collectors sake (guessing that will climb in value) and buy another rifle in 416 Rigby. Prophet River currently has several 416 Rigby rifles in stock, not the Sako Brown Bear unfortunately.

Wanted Sako Brown Bear In 416 Rigby I Live In Ontario Canada

I was looking for the same rifle recently and had several people reach out willing to sell one (all in the states though). Not a fan of the 450 Rigby? It seems like a pretty unique cartridge.

One cartridge to hunt dangerous game for the rest of your life and it can't be a 375, what are you going with?

Yup, they seem to get "the next best thing" or atleast the next most popular choices. I went into this thinking I'd choose the 416 Rigby but have been giving my 458 WinMag a second thought as it seems to be the more versatile of the two given factory loaded options (300-500grain).

    375 ruger or 416 ruger?

Ideal expanding bullet for thin skinned game (416 Rigby)?

I'm fairly surprised a 300grain p I'm fairly surprised a 300 grain 416 projectile was used on buffalo given it's S.D. of only .248. For comparison the 325 grain has a S.D. of .268 and the 350 grain has a S.D. of .289. None of the above meet the vaunted S.D. minimum of .300 that I've ready as...
  43. N

    375 ruger or 416 ruger?

Yeah it would be nice to have another American made option that offered something above the 416 Ruger and 416 RemMag. Either a 458 WinMag or other heavy hitter that could be shoehorned into a standard action.
  44. N

    375 ruger or 416 ruger?

IMO go with the 416. It's the lightest recoiling and most affordable of the 416s. A 416 will pair better with a long range offering like the 7 PRC.
  45. N

One cartridge to hunt dangerous game for the rest of your life and it can't be a 375, what are you going with?

What would you choose? 9.3 doesn't count either. A 416? 404? 458? Something bigger? What and why?

Finally, my Heym 89b, 577 NE

An absolute piece of artwork. A Heym double is a dream gun for most of us. What would one of these set you back today new from the shop? Is the 577NE priced higher than other offerings ie 500NE, 470NE?

How Much do You Shoot Your Big Bore?

How would you compare the perceived recoil of the 505 vs other common cartridges like 416 Rigby, 458 Lott? Does it feel like double those loads? do you feel like its enough recoil to seriously injure you without having perfect technique with each shot?

Ideal expanding bullet for thin skinned game (416 Rigby)?

I saw that but when you click on it, they are 416 RemMags.

How Much do You Shoot Your Big Bore?

In the last 2 years I've put 400+ rounds through my 375HH & 300+ through my 458 WinMag in the last year. Now its time to start plinking with my 416 this summer. They are meant to be shot.
