.458 win mag for North America

You may want to try 450 TSX or other long bullets in your WM and see what the group size is. Some (most?) WM do not like short bullets. Have reloaded for two and could get MOA or very close to that with 450 or 500 grain bullets but accuracy was much worse with 3-400 grain. Short bullets are out...

Current state of Dangerous Game optics?

Thinking it may be a good idea to pick up a Bushnell 4500 1-4 for range time and keep my Leupold for hunting. Wonder how long it would hold up to Lott loads.

One rifle for North American big game?

Depends where you plan on hunting. When in bear country, I carry a 375R or heavier. Some areas, a shot is like ringing the dinner bell for cleanup of the gut pile. If only one rifle, it would be a 375R or H&H with 23 or 24" barrel and a 2-7x or 1-8x scope on good QD rings for using irons after...

    416 Rigby and filler

You can try firing a few groups normally (or tipping mizzle down first), then fire a few by tipping muzzle vertical and lowering gently onto shooting bag for each shot. That should insure powder against flash hole consistently. See if there is a difference in group size. May even show a...

450 Rigby and whether to scope or not?

Up close, I find a true 1x scope with a heavy duplex to be as fast as irons. Anything aboxe 1.25x is slow and above 2x is really slow for me close in. A little magnification doesn't seem to bother some people at bad breath distance, but our eyes are all different. Would check any scope out for...

    Epoxy Cleanup

Acetone is ok but may wreck finish if it gets on a stock. My suggestion of vinegar is for hands where even acetone leaves a dark residue behind and is not healthy to use on skin. It is my understanding that acetone carries anything it breaks down across cell membranes as well as going directly...

Buddy added up the value of all the benefits a girl (daughter of a friend) is getting from the govt. She is a druggie/sometime prostitute/ with a kid. Gets housing, food, medical, everything for the kid and tons more. His assessment was that the govt supplies her $70,000 a year of goods and...

    Epoxy Cleanup

Have seen quite a few posts about stock work . Since a lot of that work involves epoxy, thought it worthwhile to mention that kitchen vinegar breaks down uncured epoxy. Scrub with some vinegar, followed with a dish detergent wash and it gets rid of that dark stain that epoxy leaves on your...

    Tally windage problem

Mirror trick insures the croashairs are centered. Counting clicks can still leave crosshairs off center if scope is damaged internally. A small mirror can be used with scope still mounted. A mirror with non-paralell surfaces might leave you a couple clicks off, but will be very close to...

    Tally windage problem

There is a small possibility that scope mount caps have been switched between bases or turned 180 degrees. If they were bored a little differently and not returned to the same mount, in the same orientation there may be some misalignment. If split vertically, there is still a small chance the...

Reamers .458 Lott vs. .450 Watts

Thanks, definitely interested in how they handled the oversize funnel throat of the 458WM. Have dealt with two 458 WM that hated lighter bullets and gave shotgun patterns with cast bullets. Did find a recipe with one cast bullet and COW filler that gave almost acceptable accuracy in both tho.

    375 ruger or 416 ruger?

Might be worth the investment for Hornady / Ruger to insure that at least a few boxes of 375 & 416 Ruger ammo is available in shops near Safari areas. Ammo availability seems to be the biggest hurdle for these rifles. Maybe those taking Ruger rifles to Africa, could forget to bring a box of...

Reamers .458 Lott vs. .450 Watts

Posted by Mule Deer (John Barsness) a few years ago (2011) on campfire. Believe he knows a bit about rifles- "The tapered throat is quite common, even though parallel throats tend to be more accurate. The way I understand it, tapered throats evolved with black powder rounds as a way to allow...

    375 ruger or 416 ruger?

I went with 375 R on a Zastava action, mostly because of the performance advantage over an H&H. Considered a 416 R, but settled on the 375. Would be great if Ruger would offer a 458 WM on same platform as the 375, that would be a great pair.

What tricks to put on light weight 416 rem mag to help reduce recoil

DGR, I understand your points about a supressor. Maybe try a Past strap on recoil pad, makes a huge difference if installed recoil pad is bottoming out. Also a linear compensator (instead of a brake) tames recoil a bit but still sends muzzle blast away from you.

Any point in a 'small' double rifle?

Double rifle in 470. Scoped bolt in 375, H&H or R. Side by side 12 ga shotgun, with same feel and function (safety etc) as double rifle. Small game/bird hunting with shotgun builds speed and familiarity with stopping rifle.

    Winchester Model 70 375 H&H vs CZ550 375 H&H

I believe the CZ550 Magnum comes into its own at 416 and above. The Mod 70 is a fantastic rifle and you really won't go wrong with either. Would be good to shoulder both and see which fits best. Irons may be the priority if needed for a follow up or taking off the scope after ringing the dinner...

    Click BANG!!!

One of the best tools I have found for reloading is a machinists stereo magnifier. When primers are flipped up on the reloading tray, take a good look to see how consistent the primer mixture is in the cup. Some, like Fed, are full, others have the anvil visible, just looking for consistency...

    Fill this Rifle Gap

Do you have a dedicated bad weather rifle? How about a Ruger 416 (or 375) in a synthetic stock with a weather resistant finish? Something basic that you won't mind a few scratches or dings on. Then you will need to go hiking or hunting in bear country to check it out. Maybe even a 458 with just...

Need Expertise Please To My Mystery

Have found it difficult to find modern cleaners that are really effective. A quick clean may remove loose fouling but leave copper and hard carbon behind. Patches may come out clean but leave a carbon ring and lots of copper. If 20 rounds are causing high pressure, might be best to start again...

    45-70 for dangerous game?

It's all been said a thousand times before, in a thousand other threads. To me, using a marginal cartridge shows lack of respect for the game animal by increasing the chance of losing a wounded animal and creating unnecessary suffering. A lack of respect for hunting in general by not caring...

Epoxy on, two-piece barrel band swivel?

Half of a lifetime ago, I saw an article on installing a barrel band. Maybe handle both rifles and see which comes up to your shoulder better and the grip and trigger position fits your hand best. For a defensive forearm that can be used from inside a vehicle, an underfolder 16" ak47 is the best choice. Short enough when folded to be manuverable and is fireable in folded configuration. Stock deploys quickly when wanted. FMJ's will penetrate auto sheetmetal and glass easily and it was...

    Flying and Mercury

Pick up a recoil pad that straps to your shoulder (Past) and use that for bench and field position practice. You won't notice recoil when shooting game, as long as you don't scope yourself. Works for me with a 375 and a Lott.

.458 Lott recoil is no joke

Heavy loads seemed to bottom out my recoil pad. Working up max loads, recoil wasn't too bad then impact on my shoulder became brutal with another grain or two of powder. Using a strap on shoulder recoil pad tamed it right back down to a heavy thump. But would still rattle your brain a bit, ha ha.

Coordinating suppressor type & thread pitch for multiple countries

Would it be possible to have QD adapters from the suppressor manufacturer you are going to use, shipped to your gunsmith here in the States to be fitted to your barrels? Might have the best chance of good fit and concentricity that way.
