I was just wondering what everyone’s opinions were about secondary safeties on DG rifles, both doubles and bolts. “Bolted” safeties on DRs and safeties on bolt guns with locking levers/switches, among other combinations.

Specifically in the context of up close and personal DG situations/high stress situations. Is it similar in the minds of most to an automatic safety like you find on some DRs in that familiarity with your chosen arms trumps all else?

That we be my big assed fingers on the ruger safety.

geez. i am an amatuer at this. I can hinestly say i have had only one dangerous game rifle in my hands (not a lot in use in NZ) and its my Remington 700 416RM. So in regards to that I have never seen or heard about a second safety as shown.
I will say though I'm not a fan. Engineering wise I can appreciate the design but nope. Too fiddly for me. and something else to slow it all down.
Yes I do get it would be like using a shotgun with auto safeties and getting into muscle memory from constant use and practice but it is just redundant.

I prefer simple, not complicated. So, one safety is enough for me.

You really dont want to go by checklist of procedures when buffalo is charging.

One safety is must, everything more then that is complicated.

Usually one safety is enough - that is, if it is a real safety that
blocks the firing pin and not only the trigger. Automatic safety
on double rifles is a much discussed topic - I personally do not
like it, as in the heat of the hunt you might forget it and try to pull the
trigger in vain, after reloading.

What I have seen on a DG magazine rifle was the socalled "Ni***r
Safety - a small bolt on a Mauser, blocking the classical safety switch
on top to be operated. Explanation: local gunbearers tend to fiddle with
the client's rifle, and if is loaded and on safe, as it makes sense on a DG
stalk, the boom you hear from behind could be your last impression on this earth...

Anyway. I'd prefer to carry my rifle myself on the finishing stalk und have the
gunbearer carry it underloaded on long stalks.

Thanks again for your support on the Rhodesian Shotgun thread. From the amount of "LIKES" it received, it appears there was only ONE person who objected. Hes also the same one who continually insisted on interjecting his posts that werent relevant to the thread.
