Woohoo! It’s that season again here in Colorado! December! Have to get my lungs ready to try once again to call in a mountain lion! You can only use a mouth call...no electronic calls! Just a bit scary knowing something is out there stalking you! Yikes!

I called one in last year using only my voice mimicking rabbit distress. I didn't have a cougar tag... You should have seen that thing run when it hit my scent. Wow. Not sure I've ever seen anything go so fast. Memorable experience.

A couple Colorado whoppers for viewing pleasure.

This is what happens from a bad shot. Luckily, we got this big guy. Hit too far forward from a rushed shot.

My buddy shot one stalking him in Co 2 years ago right in the collar- not much choice as the cat was 20' from him.....shocked him when he glanced around as he did not expect the cat to get that close so silently.
I’ve inadvertently called in several big lions over the years while bugling and cow elk calling.

Mountain lion hunting is exciting and so much fun. Tough work at times and not successful on every outing. I enjoy the mountains but mostly I appreciate listening to the hounds run. Happy hunting 2023, TheGrayRider.

Oh am I envious of those handsome cougars! I still have a goal of calling one in. Granddaughter and I have only made it out once this year trying. She covers my back while I call.
Still it’s fun just knowing one could mysteriously appear at any moment.

I was unsuccessful over several seasons and many a tag soup trying to call lions in AZ back in my 20’s. For 2024, the plan is to go find an outfitter and hunt one over hounds. I could try calling again, but I’m a bit rusty after 7 years east of the Mississippi.

They are still one of my favorite hunts.

Hunting over hounds is a lot easier than it used to be. A few decades ago I was invited to go on a lion hunt over hounds. It involved running on snowshoes up and down mountains for several miles.
Recently I got another invitation but told my buddy that I could not do that anymore at my age. He told me that the dogs have a GPS so we sit in the truck and drink coffee until the GPS shows the dogs stopped moving and has treed a lion.

where are you planning on going, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico??? Hunting a mountain lion is on my bucket list of hunts to do. I don't believe I'll be able to ever afford a leopard hunt.

Hunting on snowshoes in British Columbia.

Sad situation here in Colorado. Last season was likely my last opportunity to try to call one in and harvest it. Non-conservationist state! No understanding of the balance of nature and man’s part in it.
Angry old guy!

Growing up in Montana the trappers I knew who took cougar over hounds usually shot them in the head with .22 magnum. My daughter bought a nice pelt to mount for her taxidermy course. And it was shot in the head. She did a nice job on that one.

Thanks again for your support on the Rhodesian Shotgun thread. From the amount of "LIKES" it received, it appears there was only ONE person who objected. Hes also the same one who continually insisted on interjecting his posts that werent relevant to the thread.
