WTB Buffalo rifle

My question before you lay down any money is have you shot an average weight 375H&H, 416 Rigby, 458Lott, etc?

Many very experienced hunters on this forum will tell you without shame that the 375's are the upper limit of their recoil tolerance. For others it's the 416's that that they can shoot accurately, but no more.

Most of us would truly hate to see you set your heart on a rifle, only to hate it in the long run. If there's a way you can shoot one of the big bores, a test drive of sorts, you may get a better idea of what suits you best.
I hunt regularly with a 375 rum. Have owned a #1 in 416 Rigby no stranger to some of the big boys.

I have a 458 Win Mag that I have been playing with. Boyd's thumbhole laminated stock, 26 inch barrel with a muzzlebrake, Weaver 2.5x steel scope. Built on a BRNO VZ24 action.
One of those I'd hate to sell, but probably should.

Appreciate the offer but 458 win isnt on my short list at this point.

I am in the beginning stages of planning a Buffalo hunt. I am looking for a bolt gun in something like a 416 rigby, 458 lott, 450 rigby or 500 jeffery. I am open to other suggestions. this is not my first nor will it be my last trip to Africa. I am no stranger to big guns. I am not looking to spend 8-10k but I would like something classy, somewhat unique maybe. I know I am asking the world but just want to see what it out there.

DM Sent.

Iv got an AHR CZ 550 in 416 Rigby with a RJRenner Rigby Modified stock. IE modified after a Rigby style.Wears a Leupold 1 1/5 x5 scope and could include an RMR.
Lots of upgrades.
I would love to see photos of this, if you are so inclined.

Price, please
I can't find one for sale to compare so I'm going to go with $6500. Which incidently is how much Rigby quoted us just to mimic the engraving and inletting albeit much smaller.

Would a Dave Norin Mauser in 404 Jeffrey be of interest?

I have a Matrix tuned CZ 550 in .458 Lott (solid comfortable shooter) and a really pretty Empire in .416 Rigby. More detail and pictures available if you're interested. I have dies and components too if you reload.

@Tikkamike - Let me know if you're interested in any more info:

Offered for sale is my Matrix tuned CZ 550 .458 Lott. These are the guys selected by Wayne Jacobson to continue on his CZ upgrade work after American Hunting Rifles started focusing on custom orders only. I cherry picked the desired updates but it is almost identical to their #3 package. Removed the front sight, cut and crowned barrel to 22”, new front sight, with appropriate insert, height matched to existing aperture sight on rifle (believe I still have this loose and will include), Matrix proprietary rear express sight (currently installed), new black Pachmayr Decelerator recoil pad, shaped to fit, sling swivel barrel band, installed new trigger, polished action and confirmed feeding, installed new flag safety, straightened and filled bolt knob and added texture, sand blasted metal, and Duracoated metal with satin black. 8 lbs. 11 oz on my digital scale with a 14” LOP.

Nearly all of the improvements were focused on function. This is an honest working rifle and has been hunted. There are some minor knicks in the stock that I’ve highlighted in the pictures below. Overall, it has the classic walnut and blued look. While there may be prettier rifles, there aren’t going to be much better functional rifles. This is a very capable and reliable DG rifle. It comes to shoulder quickly and on point. Feeds like butter. I’ve shot it off sticks less than 20 times and am the second owner. I’m of average build and find it comfortable to shoot with a good fit that limits muzzle climb and allows for quick follow up shots. Even my sister who is my height but 50 pounds lighter shot it well. This is a DG rifle that I would not hesitate to take anywhere with confidence.

Included with the rifle are some loaded ammo, dies, and primed brass. Enough to get you started shooting and have brass to begin reloading.

  • 34 rounds factory Hornady DGS 500 grain + 6 once fired brass
  • 45 handloads (roughly an even mix of Swift A-Frames and Woodleigh SNRN; both 500 grain) made for this rifle
  • 19 primed Hornady brass
  • Hornady Custom Grade Dies

I’m asking for $5,495 for the full package plus shipping to your FFL. This is less than replacement value for the tuned gun alone (my guess would be $3k for the gun and $3.4k per Matrix’s #3 pricing quoted on their website). Ammo and components I’d estimate at around another $1,000. Only selling to make some room in the safe. Would love to see this solid package get passed along to someone that can appreciate it and put it to work against DG as the good lord intended.

@Tikkamike here is the info on the other rifle:

For sale is a beautiful dangerous game rifle from Empire in .416 Rigby in their Standard Model. It has a very nice, straight grained piece of walnut with an undulating wave to it, good light / dark contrast, ebony fore end, classic English lines, hand cut checkering, tasteful knurling on the bolt handle. All of the fine aesthetic details. It also features Empire’s own proprietary double square bridge Mauser 98 style action (Empire 98S Mauser), three position Winchester style flag safety, adjustable rear express sight, hooded front sight, and a front barrel band. I find the gun well balanced with a solid “between the hands” feel. Have only shot it off hand less than 10 times and I do not believe it was fired before me. It performed well in my simple minute of buffalo tests. Have not developed a load or mounted a scope yet.

It has been to Matrix Gunsmithing where a new CZ magazine was installed, stock glass bedded, metal cerakoted, adjusted the feed ramp to the new magazine, and feed and function were confirmed. The barrel is stamped only “416” but Matrix did chamber cast to confirm it is a .416 Rigby. It needed a little more work after getting it back from Matrix so I sent it to Bailey Bradshaw. He took the gun apart, did a full deep dive, replaced, repaired a number of small parts including the bolt release spring, and made a new bolt release lever and extractor.

You can now purchase this gem for less than it cost new when they could still be had new in 2011. My guess is that this would have cost $8,500 then and at least 50% maybe even twice as much now. I am asking $6,495 for the rifle plus shipping to your FFL.

Sir, I will gladly take that 16 gauge off your hands. I was waiting for your Winchesters but I'm a sucker for a 16 ga.

I bought a great deal of the brass he had for sale, plus I already had many hundred rounds.

How much brass are you looking for?
