Middle of June our last hunter was Archie Nesbitt a very well know bowhunter who has hunted couple of times with us before in C.A.R before and Chad.
The objective was clearly a Bongo but the beginning of the hunt was dry for the season so tracking was very difficult.
Alain decided to try some machan but we need to adjust them for a bow hunter and make some test with Archie. But nothing shows up and still no rain for the first week.
The second week the weather was much better for tracking and we have found some fresh tracks but couldn't catch them or get in position.
The day before the last in a mineral leak we have found a very fresh track of a Bongo bull when Alain took a closer look he find the track wasn't very big but the tracker really want to give it a try.
Here we go for slow and quiet tracking in the bako and couple of minutes we joined a savanna and Alain was still not really convinced by the size of the track.
But the team continues the tracking after the savanna we joined another bako and after couple meters, Alain gave the sign to let the dogs go we didn't wait 5 minutes to hear the dogs barked but the team try to approach but the Bongo break of Alain had just the time to see the top of the horn and said it's a really big one.
The team listened to the dogs continually barking but the bongo kept moving. Alain decided to go out of the bako with Archie and the team cut up frot by the savanna to get closer. The Bongo went in the middle of another bako at about 500 yards from us the dogs could finally block him.
The Bongo was in really thick stuff we were at 25 yards when suddenly the bongo made a move and know a little window was open just behind the shoulder and Archie made a perfect arrow. The Bongo break out like a bulldozer the dogs followed a bit and came back.
We have waited about 45 minutes before started tracking again the trackers have found the arrow full of blood one the the three blades was missing. We have found him 200 yards from the shot and it's a true monster the team was very happy the bongo have scratched his nose during the run.
After the pictures and the break it was team to bring him back to camp Alain decided to gut him and carried on the pole out of the bako we had need 6 men to do it. Then we could manage to bring the car and load him.
The party at the camp with everybody was amazing.
Bow hunting it's always challenging and some very frustrating for the PH and always very impress by them.
The bongo was over 36 inch and was the world record with bow and top 5 SCI.
