For Sale Winchester Model 70 Safari Express in 458 Win Mag with controlled round feed. It is a 1996 manufacture and had not been fired until 2022. It is in great condition. The only work done was a trigger job to a crisp 4lbs and it was professionaly glass bedded the entire length from tang to the end of the barrel channel. It comes with a Leupold 1.5-5 x 24mm VX3 HD scope and leupold quick detach mounts. It has a few handling marks and mars but no significant scratches. The gun weighs in at 9.5 lbs without a sling. It is a great shooter and it feels well balanced in hand. I have put about 50 rounds through the gun since i purchased it in 2022 from an estate. $2100 for the rifle and scope. If you don't want the scope, I would be willing to reduce the price accordingly. I also have rcbs dies, cases, bullets and some loaded ammo for a extra fee. Willing to ship anywhere in the continental US insured to your FFL dealer for $100 additional. I will also ship to Alaska for actual costs.

That's a nice gun and with the scope, a good buy!
Sorry, I already have more .458's than I have time to shoot!
Good luck with your sale!

What the heck, I’ll give you another bump. It’s a Super Express - not a Safari Express. Think of it as a precursor. A couple of differences are the Monte Carlo stock, the fold down front sight, and the soldered on front swivel stud. Some are not CRF but this one is. Also made during the New Haven sweet spot although I’m not scared of the post 2000 ones. Good luck with the sale.

For what its worth, when loading .458 Win for my Heym double, I exceeded 2200 FPS with 500 grain bullets using published data for Accurate 2230 powder and Hodgdon H-4895 My rifle is regulated for 500 gr bullets at around 2130 to 2140 so I reduced the powder charges. It I were loading for a bolt action like the M70, I would load at 2200 fps.

Loading for .458 Lott in my M70, I was comfortable with 2300 FPS for 500 gr bullets. I recorded a couple loads at 2350 FPS with the same bullets with notes for each stating, "Recoil!"

With modern powders and bullets, a .458 Win is much more capable than when it got the bad reputation with factory loads some 70 or more years ago...

What powder did you use for the Lott?
The same powders, Accurate 2230 and H4895.
2230 is a compressed load but it work fine. I really like H4895 when I can find it.

Bump
If I didn’t have the exact same set up, I’d buy it. Well worth the price!!!!

You might have edited your post on the PH in the Bubye. I know the PH and is a wonderful person and a fmaily man and runs a succesful business in Zim and just doesn't want the attention that the internet offers, the ugly kind.

Hello,

Am I reading your post correctly to say that the Tsavo rifle will be coming out with a composite stock later this year? I ask because I had been looking very hard for a Tsavo, but if there is going to be a composite stock model I will wait for that.

Thank you for your time,

Andrew

Saw your post. Nice. Denver too. Genesee area (just off 70) if ever up this way. Alternatively, do you have a membership at GGC? Whatever, you'll have a wonderful time in Africa. Enjoy.
