Yes the 225gn accubonds at 2,900fps is capable of reaching out a long way and smacking big critters.

With ballistics virtually identical to a .35 Whelen, at least according to Hornady, a .350 Rem. Mag. is a good choice of a .358.
I personally would prefer a Whelen IMP. Easier to find brass than the magnum & without any neck reaming as would have to be done with any of the short mag cases made into .350 Rem mag brass.

The two bets powder I found with the accubonds where 2208/ Hodgons Varget and CFE223
CFE223 is the best powder for the Whelen in my book and with the accubonds start at 64 gn of CFE 223 and work up to a max of 69 gn. This will give you 2,900+fps. Depending on what you are shooting the 225 Sierra gkspbt with a max of 70 gn of CFE will give very similar velocities.
Noslers load of varget with the accubonds will give over 2,800fps.
As usual work up to max loads and stop at any signs of pressure
These loads turn the whei into a long range (to me anyway) round capable of delivering 2,00foe of energy out at 400yards and over 4,200fpe at the muzzle. So the Whelen ain't no prissy little short range woods cartridge that people think it is. It gives the 338 win mag a horrible shake up

I have both and find the fat ain't worth the chew with the improved.
Load the standard Whelen to it's pott and it's doing all you will ever need without wasting time and consumables forming improved cases to gain an extra 59fps using more powder

I am trying to stay with easy to find ammo .I actually have some 358 win and 350 rem mag in that huge ammo buy i made .Its just hard to go backwards from 338-378 weatherby .I heard a few 358-378s were made i only saw that one 358 STA .Its almost all long range shots where i hunt 350 yards is a close shot and 900 is as far as I will shoot but i like to stay inside 500 yards if I can .

Actually have more than 35, including my 2 and 3-ring binders of data for various calibres from .17
on up to .50 cal.

None of my loads are over book maximum. All are worked up slowly from minimum to ensure they are safe. Plus I develop my loads in the heat of summer so know they are safe all year round.
I may be old and ugly but I got that way with time, not stupidity ( well maybe a little bit).

Check out the Speer loads for the 259s @ 2,700fps

Same here.
I'm just a youngster of 75 years gone by. Been re-loading since 1967.
My newest Speer manual (#13) lists maximum Speer 250gr. at 2,350fps with H335.
We both know that is very low as most data runs in the 2,500 to 2,560fps range.

Unfortunately a lot of manuals still list old data for the Whelen. If you go on line you will find a lot of information on the newer powders that give the Whelen a kick in the arse and put it where it was designed to be. At the TOP of the heap not relegated to a mere brush cartridge.

I've always considered the Whelen to be a good 300yard ctg. That is my limit on game animals. I shoot
rifle competitions at longer ranges, but not game.
It is interesting what modern powders can do in some ctgs.
