What to do in Windhoek?

My wife and I will have a full day to explore Windhoek this coming summer and are looking for suggestions on what to see.

My son and I stayed at the W Country Club Resort during a layover. It was interesting: Hotel/Golf Course/elaborate Stone-themed pool/bars/restaurant/casino. They even have a tube ride that circles the place. Even if you're not staying there, go check it out for lunch or dinner! (Their policy was to keep our guns in a safe the entire stay.) They have drivers that can take you anywhere and know every single place in the city (Quite manageable to get around quickly.) There are city tours, 7 museums, restaurants of all types and a Zoo. We had a driver give us the mini-sightseeing tour, but had to pick up a few last-minute items (he took us to the main mall-very nice, clean, modern, fancy.) I assume you mean Winter (African) coming from the N. Hemisphere in Summer. Depending upon how much of a layover you have, there are natural parks (i.e. vijoen NP) for hiking/photo safaris, some ranches offer game drives and even a few that offer horseback tours (photo and hunting!) Most of the taxidermy/tannery/ship/dip companies are in the area of the airport, but your PH already has a system set up to seamlessly handle same. But, if you want to see some of the animals you're after, hit the Zoo, parks or taxidermy places! The only time we had layovers in W were while awaiting flights to/fro DG hunts in the Caprivi. All others the PH simply picked up/dropped off at the right time.

Joe‘s Beer House is a fun evening for eats & drinks … popular draw for both locales & tourists, reservation may be needed & especially in outdoor fire pit area. The old Brewery has a nice market & a place to buy collectibles, trinkets, etc. I would search afew tour guide sites for good ideas … enjoy Namibia.

We will be there in Sep. Already have a res a Joe's to celebrate my wife's bday. Have a driver lined up to take us around. See the big church. Hit some of the shopping. I agree with the Swakopmund recommendation. Spent two days there and a quick trip to Walvis Bay to see the flamingos!

Yes, if you do not have time for a trip to the coast as machinistbutler says, then an evening meal at Joe‘s Beer House can be a lot of fun. Great place to people watch as the evening progresses.

Nine years ago we spent a day in Windhoek with our PH Ranch owner. Attended a bull sale and feared that my wife and the PH Ranch owner were going to partner up on buying some breeding stock, Simmental Brahma cross. but that thankfully didn't happen. Went to a few gun shops to see what was available (I based my DG rifle choice on what I saw was readily available there). Spent the rest of the day watching the women shop and my buddies bride buy a Namibian sun diamond. Your entertainment may vary.

If you link up with Eagle Eye Aviation or Scenic Air you could pull this off pretty easily so long as you didn't have too much luggage for a Cessna 210 or AirVan.

In Windhoek....
Rocomama's at The Grove mall has delicious burgers.

Uncle Spike's Book Exchange is a pretty cool spot to find some old books. Last time I was there I got cool old copies of Death in the Long Grass and Call of the Bushveld, along with like a coffee table photography book of Namibia.

The fish market does a nice lunch in beautiful surroundings. The view from the top floor of the tall building near the most photographed church is unbelievable and don't forget the best place of all
JOES BEER GARDEN for a great night out.
For cheap leather goods and skins to take home already tanned Nankara tannery. I bought some Springbok skins as presents for 15 to 30 dollars AUD depending on the grade.

Wife and I spent a good couple of days wandering around Windhoek. The markets are great. And many interesting shops in the city, all walking distance.

Joe's Beerhouse is a must, book early.
