Hi guys !
I always wonder what kind a rifles being used in Africa Hunting in late 1800 and early 1900 ?
JoghnRigby , any Mauser ? Bolt actions or brake actin ?

When mausers first appeared on African hunting grounds, English nobility referred to them as "cheap european magazine rifle".
Nobility used doubles, less wealthy (and locals) whatever they could find or could afford.
So double have always been wealthy hunters tool, mausers, lee enfiled, for working men.
Good doubles have always been expensive, and have been brought to the continent by noble clientele.
Bolt actions were more accessible and numerous.

Then there was presence of all other types of guns from previous black powder era.
Roosevelt brought even Winchester 1895 to his famous safari as of 1909.

A lot of changes in that time. I recall reading Selous' book (below) which was from 1871-1880. He started with a 4-bore cap lock and by the end had progressed to a Farquharsen falling block rifle, in .461 Gibbs. Quite a change in just 7 years. It's a long book, but quite interesting.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
