What causes the hair loss around the neck of an old spiral horned animal?

I have seen that it seems like the majority of old spiral horned bulls and rams have a lot of hair loss around their neck area. I have seen it myself on my own animals. I have even let other people know it was normal when they were frantic about their taxidermy coming back with sparse hair on the neck. But I was thinking about it today and I wondered what the root biological or mechanical reason was.

I just always assumed it was like a male pattern baldness type of situation. But maybe someone who has studied it closer or a PH/outfitter knows an actual scientific reason why.

Ticks probably. Neck is one spot they can scratch with a hind leg.

OH might be on to something.

My kudu was the same way. The South African taxidermist did a great job in making it less noticeable.


I, honestly, didn't even pay attention to it one way or another when the animal was on the ground. I only noticed it when I got my taxidermy back.




But, they could be like me...
Just genetically predisposed to hair loss, and when that massive dose of testosterone kicks in, bye-bye hair!
