I got one of my hides back and was looking for something I could do with it.
A gun case was one thing that I thought of but some of the places that I found were in the $400-$500 range and didn't think I could make that work.
I am from Colorado and found a place in the town next to me that makes all sorts of out door things. I contacted them and asked about it. Daniel from sales said bring the hide down and we will see if we can work with it.
I just drove down and got it and I think it turned out great"more than great".

The company is
American Mountain Supply

These pictures might not do it justice but check this out

sooooo,how much?

I forgot to say it was a Red Hartebeest.

I am going to have to have you contact Daniel.

I was wondering what hide you had used.

If you had more than one hide i would cover your bow box with it, have seen that and it looks great!

Hi talked to Daniel this morning and they said making mine was an experiment and he thought in the future the rifle cases with your hides would run in the $150 to $175 range.

Wow you must be in a different TAX bracket than I am in. That purse would have covered more than 1/3 of my last trip to SA. My wife made me take a yellow leather purse back that I tried to get her for her birthday since she wouldn't be able to use it all the time and it was only $240.

I paid about 25% of the current asking price and that included 3 pillows from the blesbok skin. She must have gotten a huge increase in demand.

On a related note, I'm sitting on about 2 dozen back skins, so my wife is buying her own machine for sewing leather to make purses, pillows, etc.

Good to know I was thinking riding around in limos etc.
You should look them over a find one about 46 inches 'depending on how long one of your rifles are' from the hind/tail to the neck along the back that has better markings than my Red Hartebeest and ship it to Daniel so we could see what a good looking hide would look like. That was the only hide I have ever had done.

Some time ago, I thought about making one hide into a gun case, but passed on the idea. Over the years, I've seen 2 firearms damaged in soft-side cases. As soon as I could afford it (1990's), I started using hard-side cases only.

When I get a minute, I'll post pictures of the tails (from kudu, gemsbok, etc.) we've made into key fobs and chain pulls for ceiling fans in the "man cave". They are kind of neat and are easy to make. I still "owe" pictures of the trophy room that I completed a few weeks back - will include in that set of pictures.

That's really nice.

I'd like to get something like that done at some point. My hesitation has been cost, but that is more than reasonable.

I was thinking about using the tanned back skins, hair on of coarse, as throws for the backs of chairs, sofas, etc. I think with the tails on, that would be soooo cool. Some of those critters, ie., waterbuck, have such need color pattern on their backside. And---I have the wife's permission! I'm taking over "my" living room after all these years. (45)

As have I and wont use a soft case for anything now. I would also not use the hides for anything connected with luggage as the (deliberate) damage that they might sustain in transit does not bear thinking about. Even the ladies handbag could be the cause for a spoilt day (or evening) out because of the vile attitudes that many hold. For myself I know that any adverse comments may be an opportunity for some healthy education but having seen some of the anti's attacks, it is not something I would willingly subject my wife to. In home use would be the ideal use for the skins.

Hello Doug,
I am Philippe from France and plan to go hunting Caprivi in 2026, Oct.
I have read on AH you had some time in Vic Falls after hunting. May I ask you with whom you have planned / organized the Chobe NP tour and the different visits. (with my GF we will have 4 days and 3 nights there)
Thank in advance, I will appreciate your response.
Merci
Philippe
