Wanted Mauser Sporter 6.5 Swede

The other day my buddy asked for help hunting down a rifle to give his father in law for Christmas to get him into hunting. He's settled on wanting a sporterized mauser in 6.5x55. I gave him names of a couple shops to check in with but figured I'd run up the flag here too.

That's basically what he's looking for. I guess you could technically rebarrel any breed of Mauser for that cartridge but yeah

The 1896 Swedish Mauser was designed around the 6.5 x 55 cartridge. It has been my go to deer rifle for over 25 years. They are generally available on the "auction" sites. I've seen some really nice ones in the past.

I've spent the last two years slowly bringing a pawn shop rescue Husqvarna Sporter back from the bubba bin so needless to say I love the rifle and the cartridge too and can't wait to get it out in the field. My buddy is just doesn't have the patience or hands-on inclinations that I do. I'll let him know to check auction sights. I'm a little wary of sending him off to try and get a Sporter sight unseen like that as he doesn't necessarily know what to look for, which is why I was hoping someone here might have one for sale as y'all are pretty trusted in my book

I just picked up a sporterized Swede at my local gun store. It was built in Obendorf Germany at the Mauser factory. Reason being, the Swedes didn't have their Carl Gustav Stads Armory up and running at the time. BTW these rifles are well known for their accuracy.

You can buy a vintage Mauser 96 for $500 to $800 and spend another $500 sporterizing it, which then gives you a rifle worth about $300 to $400 dollars. Or you can just buy an already sporterized one for $300 to $400 dollars. @Shootist43 explained this math to me about a year ago and I bought a 6.5 Swede, sporterized Mauser 96 for $300 on GB.

I would like to help but this one would about twice that amount, I hope you are able to find a good rifle that meets his needs.

I loved to see the "Want to buy" for this thread title.

The great thing about Swedish Mausers is they are a military arm. The miltaria collectors loathe sporters and they punish the values of any modifications whatsoever.

As a result, a broad suppression of value has occurred:

Group 1: The shadetree gunsmith that bastardized a Swede Mauser with a hacksaw, then bent the bolt down, and stripped the military sights. (I get it, near worthless, ruined)

Group 2: Mid-Century US custom sporters built to Griffin & Howe / Sedgley / Niedner / Hoffman / other best builder standards of care. These guns might cost $10,000 to build today. They sell crazy cheap, a $10,000 quality example might be less than $3000. A very good quality utility grade custom rifle might indeed be found for $700-$1100, especially if a militaria collector decides to price it at a gun shop. "Just another ruined military mauser, throw it on the discount rack".

Look long and look hard, there are amazing custom Swedes out there, do not settle for anything less than exquisite.

CZ made some of their Model 550 (full sized rifle) and Model 550-FS (20” barrel carbine, with full length stock).

Since CZ recently and sadly has quit making their Model 550 series, today they are quickly rising in price, usually well more than $1,000. USA Dollars and climbing.

However, IMO at this stage, they are worth the extra money.

Weatherby did a run of Vanguards in 6.5x55, cock on opening, drilled & tapped, no bolt handle mods & Tikka also do the T3 in 6.5 i have one & its a extremely accurate rifle the old Swedish Mauser's have old world charm, but a new rifle is mechanically superior. with no hassles in mods, stocks ect.
