i must have too much time on my hands but here is a fun/fantasy question. if you were transported back to 1880, and had to walk across africa starting in benguela in angola, and finishing at quelimane in mozambique, hunting whatever you wanted on the journey, what single rifle and calibre available for purchase today would you choose to take with you and why? now i am removing the obvious choice, none of the .375 calibres may be chosen let alone mentioned!!!

i would take my 9.3x74r double, as with soft and solid bullets it could be used on anything, and is a pleasure to carry not being heavy.

Hunting whatever I wanted, I would have to say "The rifle" would be a Remington 700, caliber size I would opt for a 30-06 with a quality 180gr bullet or my favorite the 35Whelen with a 225gr. TBBC. If I have to choose one caliber though, it would be the 35Whelen. I don't have much interest in the cats of Africa, but feel (if needed) it would work. The big nasties I would avoid if possible (but again use it if nessesary). I would hunt as many plains game species as I possibly could, and keep my belly full. Once I got to Mozambique, I would drink so much beer you would have to carry me to the boat for the journey home.

Neat fantasy:cool2:

Well I would say Blaser R93 DUO in .416 rem. that is because i can't use one of those unmentionable #75 rounds I have not owned a R93 DUO but seen one once. Something about a bolt action double barrel that can hold eight rounds and back in 1880 well then buffs and ellies WOW I could only imagine the fun but I don't think I would ever make it all the way across I think I would just homestead in the middle somewhere and die of old age first

Well I would have to say my custom built Savage in a 300 Win Mag using 180gr TSX BT don't beleive there is anything in Africa that I wouldn't tackle (IF I HAD TO).

Without a doubt, my .416 Rigby w/ 400 gr Barnes TSX and Barnes Solids.

I guess I would take my 338 Win Mag. Bullets would probably be TSX.

So I would be prepared and never undergunned (Bart will love this), I would take my CZ .404 Jeffery with 400 gr Barnes Triple Shock bullets with my handload that drives them to about 2250fps. Plenty for everything!

.318 Wesley Richards Accelerated Express with .250 gr Kynoch solids/ SPs and G&H side mount with Swarovski 1x6. Will handle anything from camp meat to elephant.

ses i am glad to see you are a caring person by thinking of bart and trying to make him happy. i am waiting with great anticipation to see what calibre he would choose , got to be minimum .416 ?

HA!

My first choice would be a Winchester M70 in 9.3x62. Loaded with 250 grain Barnes TTSX and 280 grain CEB BBW#13 bullets.
My second choice would be the same gun in 416 Ruger. Loaded with 350 grain Barnes TTSX and 350 grain CEB BBW#13 bullets.

Since its a fantasy I would take my marlin lever action in 45-70. Of course some hand loads with hornady DGX and DGS bullets for the dangerous stuff. Then some leverevolution rounds as well....oh how fun that would be!

And a large - no make that very large - bottle of antibiotics! Always thought the 19th century would a great place to live if I could bring penecilin with me.

I guess I'd have to go classic, with a 9.3x62mm Mauser. Then again, it's like heaven - if I can't take my *** H&H, I'm not going!

I would like to use my custom mauser 98 458win mag. with 500grs bullets .
brgds

My M98 9.3x62 with plenty of ammo.

@Mac Baren, I live central to city of Cincinnati. I have work travel early this week but could hopefully meet later this week (with no schedule changes). What area of town are you working/staying in?
Kind regards
Ron
