Victoria falls information

We are going to be in RSA in august and my father would really like to see Victoria falls. I’m wondering if anyone could provide me some information about things to do and how long we should plan to stay. We will be travelling with 2 children 8 and 11 years old.

Just wondering about, places to see or activities that we should plan, different options for accommodations, how much time would people suggest we stay, great restaraunts?

Check out the Stanley and Livingston, wonderful place. Be sure to eat on the terrace of the Vic Falls hotel.

Victoria Falls is not in RSA, FYI. A travel agent should be able to make arrangements for a side trip though. In April we are going to SA, first time. It would have added 3-4 days to our plan for the flight up and time there to make it worthwhile. A lot will depend on what part of SA you are going to be in...just like visiting say, NY it is impossible to see everything in one trip. Best find out what is available in your region and optimize your time there. Just my opinion.
I am already thinking though that in fairness to my wife, a 2nd trip in a few years may be in order with less focus on the hunting end. Probably see Cape Town, work our way to the NE corner, and perhaps the few day trip to Victoria Falls.

Don’t miss high tea on the veranda at the Victoria Falls Hotel. So colonial and so traditional. Not that your kids will appreciate it. My wife loved it

We spent 4 days 3 nights at Victoria Falls in June of 2013. Absolutely spectacular. There was at that time helicopter tours over the falls and provides a great overview. Enjoy a drink at the Victoria Falls Stanley lounge just for a bit of nostalgia. Take in the presentation of the engineering involved in the building of the bridge if its still provided. For the truly adventurous they have bungee jumping off the bridge (not for me but i watched several people do it with no casualties) and on the Zambian side of the falls there is a place called the Devils Pool where you can actually go into the river at the edge of the falls and the guides will old onto your feet as they edge you over the precipice. The river water wasn't adequate when we were there so it wasn't available at that time. Do a search on it. As far as eating, we took in the High Tea at the Victoria Falls Hotel and one evening we had supper at a place called "In da Belly". it was delicious, crocodile meat in the salad. Be ready for the hawkers trying to sell you trinkets. One of the special souvenirs we bought there was a pencil sketch of the Big Five that a local artist did over three days while we were there. A truly one of a kind picture that is hanging in our living room. Also be aware of the elephants that wander through town like they own it. But I guess, they probably do.

I liked 3 days and 4 nights both times, see the falls (balloon, helo and walk were all options), walk the park trails, day or 1/2 day at carving village, yes high tea at Vic falls hotel, also eat a croc tail steak served fine dinning style, visits to croc farm and cat rescue farm, bungee jump from Zim/Zambia border bridge, and watch a traditional dance for an evening show. A must is a sunset cruise on the Zambezi, and a day fishing. Its been a few years since I visited so hope all is still valid in these crazy times. Always add days before and after a Zim safari, even if PH has to drive up from Bulawayo. (thanks Wayne). Vic Falls are most certainly worth a few extra days playing tourist.

2 to 3 days in Vic Falls is good and a perfect way to relax and unwind after a couple weeks in the bush.

We stayed at the Old Drift Lodge, which is located within the Zambezi National Park, along the river.

All meals and activities are included in the price. Our favorite activity was the sunrise cruise on the river- lots of Hippo pods, unique birds, etc. Also, sunset sundowners after a game drive through the park was also great fun.

Being there during covid was awesome. We had the entire national park to ourselves. Same for the cruises- no other boats on the river!

Glamping is in full effect at the Lodge:

Food was great too. Huge warm and cold breakfast dishes and the crocodile tail at dinner was delicious.

My wife and I did a photo safari to Chobe in Botswana and then traveled the short distance to Livingstone, Zambia and stayed there for 3 days. Great trip! Stayed at the Royal Livingstone Hotel and could walk to the falls from there. We booked the dinner train deal and that was pretty good too. We did it in July and the water over the falls was unusually low. We plan to go back sometime and stay on the Zim side, which has a different view of the falls.
