What to take with You, on the field ?? Very easy, take with You, and use earprotection!! I missed just that october 13 1990, clock 13:46, I did shoot a Moose up north in Sweden and I have forgot my earprotection. The TINITUS hit me the very same second as the bullet hit the Moose, since that, every second I do have a sound in my left ear at 84 decibels. Every second of my life, it is not comfortable at all.

We are lucky in Ireland that suppressors are not a big deal. You must have permission to acquire and possess. You apply to your local firearms officer. Unfortunately some have been watching too much TV or movies and are convinced that the sound of the shot is totally masked.
However the 2 rifles I take to Africa, a 375 and a Rigby 275 do not and never will wear sound moderators. The thought of a 50+year old Rigby wearing a moderator ! Heresy !
So I wear a pair of Peltor Sportacs. I note watching uTube and the like a lot of the PH’s wear similar. It does restrict you to wearing a baseball type hat or similar. It’s difficult to get a pair of Peltors over your pith helmet.

Supressors, muffler ljuddämpare or whatever theire name is, in Sweden, the goverment has taken a new law. From 1st of july 2022 the law is changed, all restrictons is taken away, IT IS FREE, to use one for all Your guns or one for each gun. It has been quite easy to get a license the last years but we have election oncoming fall, and this is a fine "sandwich" ro all hunters.

I use the 3M Peltor LEP-200 OR for hunting and then the 3M Peltor ProTac Hunter for shooting on the range.

I once had a visiting hunter by the name of "Scott". We were hunting at night from a blind. First we had a pride of Lions walk past the blind. Then we had a pride of Lions run a heard of Buffalo past the blind some actually hitting the blind. An hour later a heard of elephant came thru, with one stopping to feed on the blind. Unbeknown to me he was wearing a pair of E.A.R. ear protectors which greatly amplified every sound that night. I doubt if Scott will ever hunt anything at night again.

Just something to think about!

So sorry. I’m suffering as well. A lifetime of shooting has left me in need of hearing aids at 50 years of age. Most of my shooting that caused the damage was simply carrying a .22 Mag as my daily ranch gun.
I wish suppressors were more popular when I was young.

After 50+ years of shooting all types of guns, I have lost about 40% of my hearing.

I have always used ear protection, but maybe it wasn´t enough, so now I am really careful, use plugs, muffs, or both, depending of the activity.

Supressors are illegal in my country, but when in RSA, I ask the oufitter for supressed guns.

I suffer also, the ringing in my right ear is a constant reminder

Maybe I'm lucky, but my hearing is excellent after 30+ years of shooting. I often dont wear ear plugs if just shooting 22lr from a rifle and never have I worn any while hunting. Of course I dont have a muzzlebreak either.

You will only find out when it's too late to do anything about it. Highly recommend everyone wear ear protection while shooting and (if possible) use noise canceling ear pro for hunting.

My hearing is compromised also. When I was younger, I shot a lot of trap WHILE wearing ear protection. It was the dove hunting without ear protection over many years that ruined my hearing. I can't hear high pitched sounds, voices (womens'- a benefit! LOL) and difficulty hearing conversations with a lot of background noise. PROTECT YOUR HEARING cause you can't get it back!

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
