Does United need any advance notice if you are traveling with a firearm.

Domestically or international? Domestically, no and it probably depends on connecting flights for international. I flew United to New Zealand and didn't do any notice with United, but did do the major hoopla with NZ to bring in a firearm. For domestic flights, when I checked in at Houston (IAH) to go to Wyoming, the United folks did act as though it was the first gun they had ever seen. I was checking in at Terminal C and there were no TSA agents to check a gun. A United guy took my rifle case and key and walked it over to Terminal B to get it checked and then carried it back to me, waiting at the counter in Terminal C.

Flew with them last month and they didn't ask/require any advance or additional info.
If you do use them, give yourself a minimum of 4hr layover coming back into the US.
Their process isnt very streamliner and will take some time with firearms.

Is Newark as bad as it was or is it getting better with firearms. I have 4.5 hour layover.

I flew on United from Dallas to Newark to Jo'burg in July. No problems. Just tell the ticket agent at check-in you are traveling with unloaded hunting rifles and they will process. My return flight arrived at Newark very early morning, so no lines and the Customs agent was very friendly and helpful with clearing the rifles back into the US. You will need your ammo in a separate, locked container. The agents asked to see it on both outbound and inbound flights.

It's not bad just not very efficient. We had a 4.5hr layover and had 1 hour to spare once finished up.
Everyone was friendly and helpful.

Hi Jay,

Hope you're well.

I'm headed your way in January.

Attending SHOT Show has been a long time bucket list item for me.

Finally made it happen and I'm headed to Vegas.

I know you're some distance from Vegas - but would be keen to catch up if it works out.

Have a good one.

Mark
