Yes under 40 days till the plane takes off. Went to range this morning to get in some practice. Been trying to get there once a week. Finished up and was putting guns in bags. I noticed this. Will call Ruger first thing Monday see if they will ship out replacement stock. Not gonna take a chance shipping it to them. Talked to a friend that has the same rifle. I swapped out his factory stock for him a few years back. Just got off the phone and he told me I could have his original stock.

That's no good at all. If Ruger can't get you one asap, there are several stock companies who would most likely have something in stock you could use.

At least you have a plan to get it ready again. Good luck.

It looks like the rifle already made it through some Paris baggage handlers.

ROFLMAO — Had the plan formulated before I got back to the house. Just got back from buddies house and grabbed the spare stock. He was happy to get it off the top of his safe. Now all I have to do is stay out of Paris I guess.

Had same issue with .416 Ruger.

Do you believe the Ruger was poorly bedded or a problem in the laminate?
Maybe something else?

Could have been due to 10 degree temps this morning. Looks like a problem with the laminate the way the pieces came out from behind the lug.

Luckily you’ve got a backup plan, but I’d be nervous about a new stock!
Best of luck!

another nasty little thing that you can't see is the need for adequate clearance of the action screws, particularly the rear tang screw.
should insufficient clearance exist, a split stock is almost guaranteed on bigger calibre rifles, and you don't see it coming.
bruce.

Totally agree with you Bruce, that original rifle had issues. Lack of rear tang clearance, poor bedding or both.

Well she is in a new/used stock now. Looks like I might have to do a bit of work to get some clearance around the tang. I’ll have it done and at the range by next weekend.

You didn’t put it in a Lead Sled did you?

I am no Ruger rifle expert - matter of fact I do not own any - so I do not know if the following suggestion applies, but IF your rifle would fit in this stock, I would suggest that there is no better stock in this price range, and there are many stocks that cost a whole lot more and that are not better, and if anything not as good...

I have these on .300 Wby, 340 Wby, .375 H&H, .416 Rigby and a few other lesser calibers and they are just plain indestructible, not to mention very attractively finished and about perfectly shaped and perfectly engineered with full length aluminum bedding block from front swivel to stock wrist, built-in bedding pillars, floated barrel, great Decelerator pad, and a nice choice of colors...

And priced at $300, what is there not to like :)

A laminated stock is basically pretty strong. But.... obviously not for every calamity. Even the new stock needs to be relieved in the correct areas and then glass bedded. Probably enough time to order a kit, receive it and finish well within the 3 week limit. BUT, if you've never bedded a rifle, maybe best not to try it in this situation. Probably best to just do some judicial relief and hope it works. Depending on the model of Ruger, they aren't quite as straight forward for bedding as a Rem or Win would be. The other alternative also maybe the best- a good synthetic as has been suggested. Good luck. No fun running into such issues on such short notice before a big trip like this.

What caliber is the rifle?

I had a stock split on a Ruger 77 in 338 WM. It split on a Sunday at the range I was leaving for Alaska in like 10 days, Monday I called Ruger and explained the situation to them, Tuesday I sent it to them and Friday it was back to me. No charge with a letter of apology, I was thrilled.

Must have been back in the good old days.

What a great way to kick off our 2025 hunting season in South Africa.

This beautiful Impala ram was taken at just over 300 yards, took a few steps and toppled over.

We are looking forward to the next week and a half of hunting with our first client of the year.

Do you have any more copies of African Dangerous Game Cartridges, Author: Pierre van der Walt ? I'm looking for one. Thanks for any information, John [redacted]
