Some recent news on the issue of airlines refusing to carry trophies:

Conservation Force, Dallas Safari Club, Houston Safari Club, the CAMPFIRE Association, the Tanzania Hunting Operators Association (TAHOA), and Corey Knowlton filed suit today against Delta Air Lines, Inc. to compel an end to Delta's illegal embargo on transport of hunting trophies of the "Big Five" (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo) from Africa. The plaintiffs allege the embargo on transport of a specific class of non-dangerous cargo violates Delta's duty as a common carrier not to discriminate against passengers or cargo.

This is itself good news, but I am left to wonder - where is SCI in all of this? There have been lots of threads and posts recently, particularly with reference to Cecil the Lion, about what SCI is actually doing for and on behalf of hunters. I know they asked people to write letters (as did many others) on this issue, but I wonder why they are not a part of this initiative. Were they not asked? Did they decline to participate? As the organization which claims to be "First for Hunters", where are they, and when will they address the fact that so many people are wondering what they are doing for us?

Good luck finding them Hank! First for hunters???? My A-s. Pardon my crudeness but I am so done with them.

Good news!

Regarding SCI, they are quickly turning themselves irrelevant. A complete dearth of leadership.

The only place they seem to be relevant is at fund raisers, and their convention. Members really need to open there eyes to what is going on.

I have spoke with conservation force and they get back to you quickly with any questions and can tell you exactly what they are doing. I have been really impressed by them.

It seems to be SCI is becoming less relevant by the minute, I really think it is unfortunate as we need as much help as we can get.

I have emailed John Jackson at Conservation Force and both times he has responded within a half day. This is a busy man. So why is it so hard to hear anything from SCI? I like this organization, I still support them and I really want them to succeed. But they'd rather make me look like a sucker I guess.

I guess they are dropping the ball again

While I can't comment on the merits of the case, it would be interesting to know if SCI was asked to participate and declined or was even asked.

or why they were not leading the charge?

Reply from the NRA was underwhelming............:(

Thank you for contacting the NRA-ILA regarding the newly instated Delta Airline policy. The NRA-ILA is aware of the policy but as a corporation they can form policies that they deem appropriate. I hope you find this information helpful.

I posted this reply from the NRA a few months ago. NRA has been as weak as SCI on this issue. Back in August, I also emailed Conservation Force and a few others, suggesting the "Common Carrier" issue. I'm not a lawyer and I didn't even stay at a Holiday Inn Express, but it seems that is the legal issue that will save the day on this issue.

I recall seeing that reply and thinking "I hope you find this information helpful"? Really? What about that statement is helpful? I could as easily say that governments can form policies they deem appropriate, and the NRA would object loud and long.

Having said that, I think there is a difference between SCI and the NRA. The trophy shipment issue is one that impacts hunters, but not gun owners. And while most hunters are gun owners, I'm not sure that most gun owners are hunters. So the NRA could have replied that this is not really their issue, but one for SCI and the like. And that wouldn't have been unreasonable, at least to me.
