This 375-338 Ruger 77 came home to Wisconsin - Mr AHR's personal hunting rifle - my field test.

Hello All,

I watched this rifle for sale on a different forum for 19 days, and although I just bought the John Rigby Brevex that used up all my available cash, I couldn't pass up such a wonderful rifle. Especially since it was Wayne's personal hunting rifle - A custom 1979 tang safety Ruger 77 - one of my favorite rifles from my youth.

Imagine my delight to own Mr. AHR's personal hunting rifle. The upgraded features on this rifle are nothing less than marvelous, right up to par with Wayne's other AHR Custom rifles. Features that are similar to the AHR Custom 500 Jeffery that I own.

Although listed as a 375-338 wildcat, this is also known as the .375 Chatfield-Taylor - the little brother to the .416 Chatfield-Taylor (of which I own 2) There is a ton of loading data available for the 375 Taylor and 338 brass is plentiful and easy to form. Its possible to obtain 375 H&H performance with some creative hand-loading. Although in my case I down-loaded for Wisconsin Whitetail. I topped the rifle with a 4x32 I.O.R Valdada European Scope with 4A German reticle and rotating eyepiece focusing. The weight of the rifle with the scope and loaded (3 down 1 up) trips the scale at 9 pounds 1 ounce. This extra weight helped to reduce recoil.

Before the rifle arrived, Wayne had sent ahead the brass and dies so ammo was ready and waiting for the rifle. A fast trip to the range proved the rifle is ready for the field. Thank you Wayne!

as always, your comments are welcome.

Here's the original listing and my field test

Congrats, I too was watching and wanting it but it just wasn’t going to happen for me, enjoy it!

Wow, a terrific rifle. You did well. I had Wayne do two stage one upgrades to my pair of 602's back when he had time to do them. I feel fortunate.

Wayne gave that rifle away. If it was appropriate size for an adult male it would have sold much faster. :)

Well, I think I qualify as an adult male being 72 years old. :) I'm 5' 10" and weigh 190 pounds. The 13+" LOP is perfect for me and its right on the money for the thick Wisconsin hunting clothes I wear in our late November Deer Hunting season.

Congrats! That's one of a few cartridges I've always wanted in a rifle.

I miss read the Chronograph in my field test target that I posted above. Actual velocity average was 2110 fps, not 2000 fps. Perfect for Wisconsin Whitetail and Black Bear. It would also be great for Elk. We now have an Elk hunt here, but only have 10 tags given per season, for which there are over 18,000 applicants.

Do you have any cull hunts available? 7 days, daily rate plus per animal price?
